Chelsea forward’s immediate future becomes ‘certainty’ after speculation over clause that could’ve prompted move

Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi train for Chelsea

Chelsea will not be welcoming one of their out-on-loan attacking stars back early despite recent claims that they could.

In recent years, Chelsea have become notorious for the number of players they send out on loan. In some cases, the players who leave temporarily will never really have a future back at Stamford Bridge.

The plan for others, though, is to equip them with the necessary experience to become more suitable for their own first team in the long run.

This season, they have more than 20 players out on loan. Some of those are flops who failed to make the grade after joining the club – such as Romelu Lukaku and Tiemoue Bakayoko – while others include their own academy graduates aiming to develop elsewhere.

Loans away were beneficial for current first-team members like Mason Mount and Reece James earlier in their careers. Hence, there is a blueprint for some of their successors to follow.

Among that group is winger Callum Hudson-Odoi. He emerged from their academy with great potential, attracting interest from Bayern Munich at a young age.

Ultimately, Chelsea stood firm to keep him, although his progress has been stunted in recent years. Thus, they decided to send him out on loan to a different Bundesliga destination – Bayer Leverkusen – for 2022-23.

So far, the 22-year-old has played in 15 matches for Bayer Leverkusen. Of those appearances, 11 have been starts. Hudson-Odoi has only returned one goal and assist each, though.

There have been rumours going back a few weeks that Chelsea could recall him in January. A clause in his deal with Bayer Leverkuen would allow the Blues to bring him back.

Since his exit was sanctioned when Thomas Tuchel was in charge, rather than Graham Potter, there might have been a change of opinion about Hudson-Odoi back in west London.

Callum Hudson-Odoi future cleared up

Regardless, Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, has now confirmed that it is a ‘certainty’ that Hudson-Odoi will be staying in Germany.

“We assumed that Callum would stay, but now we also have the certainty that he will stay with us,” Rolfes told Bild.

“We’re happy about that, because he’s a very important player for us.”

Once his spell with Bayer Leverkusen concludes, Hudson-Odoi will only have one year remaining on his contract with Chelsea. Therefore, this could be viewed as something of a make-or-break season for him.

He can only hope that Bayer Leverkusen head coach (and former Liverpool midfielder) Xabi Alonso continues to show faith in him throughout the remainder of the season.

Beyond then, his future could be in question again. His focus must simply be on delivering consistent performances in the Bundesliga and Europa League for now.
