Chelsea insist on stunning Neymar raid as PSG asking price emerges for permanent deal

Chelsea are willing to buy Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain this summer and have learned what it will take for them to do so, it has been claimed in France.

There has been plenty of speculation about Chelsea making an ambitious move for Neymar in recent weeks. As the world’s most expensive player of all time after his 2017 transfer to PSG, his arrival into the Premier League would be sensational.

And with Chelsea out of European competition next season, the idea of signing one of the world’s most dazzling players is even more fascinating.

But Le Parisien insists in the latest update that Chelsea are aiming to sign Neymar. In fact, rather than previous claims of a loan deal being possible, they would now supposedly be willing to spend on a permanent transfer.

For that to happen, PSG would be commanding a fee somewhere between €50m and €70m (£42.8m to £60m). After all, there are still at least two years remaining on Neymar’s contract.

Despite his injury issues and the fact he is now 31 years of age, Neymar is still a highly valuable player. But Chelsea have not been afraid to spend big in the Todd Boehly era so far, for better or worse.

To get the wheels in motion for a Neymar transfer, the Blues have apparently made contact with the winger’s representatives.

The same goes for another of his suitors, although Le Parisien has not yet been able to discern the other interested party’s identity.

Neymar needs convincing to leave PSG for Chelsea

One thing Chelsea will have to put significant effort into is convincing Neymar to leave Paris. He still wants to stay at PSG, who have just appointed Luis Enrique as their next manager.

Neymar previously made 145 appearances under the Spanish tactician at Barcelona. He scored 90 goals and provided 68 assists in the process. Under no other coach has Neymar ever played, scored and assisted more.

That said, he previously played under Mauricio Pochettino at PSG as well, so he would have a familiar manager to work for if he was to join Chelsea. His record under Pochettino was 47 appearances, 21 goals and 16 assists.

Importantly, though, remaining with PSG would enable Neymar to continue competing in the Champions League. After finishing in the bottom half of the Premier League in 2022-23, Chelsea cannot match that.

But reports about Chelsea and Neymar keep on coming, so there is clearly some sort of belief within west London that a move may be worth pursuing still.

Chelsea struggled for goals last season, so even though Neymar isn’t an out-and-out centre-forward, his creativity and eye for the net may give them a new dimension.
