Jamie Carragher ‘delighted’ to see Aubameyang return; weighs in on Tuchel’s Chelsea future

Thomas Tuchel and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Jamie Carragher says he is happy to see Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang return to the Premier League with Chelsea, while he has also spoken about Thomas Tuchel’s future as manager.

Chelsea replaced Romelu Lukaku late on transfer deadline day by bringing Aubameyang in from Barcelona. According to BBC Sport, the former Arsenal captain has cost Chelsea £10.3million. Marcos Alonso has left Stamford Bridge as part of the deal and is expecting to join Barcelona in return.

Aubameyang only joined Barcelona in January. But 24 games and 13 goals later, he is back in England.

Tuchel is a big fan of the goalscorer following their successful time together at Borussia Dortmund.

Mikel Arteta’s relationship with Aubameyang became strained at Arsenal due to the player’s disciplinary issues.

However, this hasn’t put Tuchel off and the manager thinks he can get the best out of the 33-year-old.

During an appearance on Sky Sports, Carragher was asked about Aubameyang’s switch to west London. He said (via Metro): “He’s a quality player, there is no doubt about that. I think it’s a good signing.

“People may question Arsenal’s role in this and the fact they let him go for free, and now Chelsea are paying money for him 12 months later.

Aubameyang ‘a good signing’ for Chelsea – Carragher

“I think it’s a good signing for Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea, and also the right decision from Mikel Arteta – look at where Arsenal are right now.

“We know Aubameyang brings goals and quality but at times there are maybe situations and misdemeanours off the pitch or within the dressing room and Arteta couldn’t stand for that.

“But Tuchel knows him well from their time at Borussia Dortmund and, as a neutral, I’m delighted he’s back in the Premier League because he’s a brilliant player.”

Chelsea have been the Prem’s biggest spenders this summer. They have brought in Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana on big-money deals.

Carragher was asked if Tuchel could come under intense pressure after the club spent so much. He replied: “Yes, that is the name of the game for any top club, and that has always been the situation at Chelsea.

“It will be interesting to see if the change in ownership changes how ruthless the club was with managers under Roman Abramovich.

“But, for me, Thomas Tuchel is one of the best managers in Europe, he’s a Champions League winner. And right now in the Premier League it’s been tough competing with Manchester City and Liverpool.

“Chelsea did need a rejig at centre-back given the players they lost. So you can understand why they have had to go into the market. But there is no doubt they have paid big money for some of the players.”

Aubameyang isn’t the only player Chelsea signed on deadline day, as they also agreed a deal for a Juventus midfielder.
