Chelsea join Man Utd in tracking Premier League veteran, as key concerns emerge for Blues first-teamer

Chelsea have joined Manchester United in tracking Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford as a growing transfer target, according to a report.

The Blues’ stopper ranks have been in the spotlight for a few seasons now amid some high-profile developments. When Thibaut Courtois left for Real Madrid in 2018, Chelsea made Kepa Arrizabalaga the world’s most expensive goalkeeper.

The Spaniard has put in some decent performances but has failed to nail down a starting role at Stamford Bridge.

That honour has largely gone instead to Senegal international Edouard Mendy, who arrived in west London in September 2020.

The 30-year-old has proved a reliable force in goal for Chelsea, but according to journalist Simon Phillips, there are doubts about his future.

And Phillips has claimed that England’s No. 1 Pickford is one of a number of names on Chelsea’s transfer radar.

“The club are also looking at new goalkeepers for next summer, with Edouard Mendy’s future unclear,” Phillips told Substack.

“I am told that Jordan Pickford from Everton is on Chelsea’s radar. There are other names, but I haven’t got them yet.”

Pickford future unclear as Chelsea circle

Previous reports have revealed how Man Utd are also keen on Pickford. The Red Devils are looking at eventually replacing David de Gea and believe the Everton man would be a good fit.

Pickford moved to Goodison Park in 2017 and has established himself as the first-choice for club and country. In fact, he has made 217 Premier League appearances in his career.

However, this season is a big one for him as he turns 29 in March and will have one year left on his deal at the end of the season.

Mendy, meanwhile, has just under three years left on his Chelsea contract, so it is not an urgent priority to replace him just yet.

Nevertheless, he is now advancing through his thirties so the need to think about a new long-term goalkeeper signing is definitely there.

The same can be said for Man Utd, with 31-year-old De Gea’s deal expiring next summer, although there is an option to extend that by a year.

Everton star could leave amid Mendy concern

There is definitely a feeling that Pickford could leave Everton in the next few transfer windows.

He has been a loyal servant to the Toffees and rarely lets them or England down.

However, there must be a point when he considers how much further Everton can go before his career comes to an end.

They have struggled to make progress in the past few seasons and Pickford may be better off seeking a new challenge.

Everton would surely not stand in his way, although the transfer fee may be a sizeable obstacle for interested clubs.

As for Mendy at Chelsea, a few mistakes have crept into his game of late and Chelsea boss Graham Potter will no doubt be keeping a close eye on him.

One thing is for sure, the futures of Pickford, Mendy and De Gea will certainly be situations to watch in the coming transfer windows.
