Chelsea could be presented with the opportunity to strengthen their defence, with midfielder Jorginho making way in a supposed swap deal.
Finding new defenders is a priority for Chelsea after the exits of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen. What’s more, Cesar Azpilicueta could be looking for a departure as well.
Hence, it is clear where Chelsea need to strengthen this summer. Their priority target is Jules Kounde, for whom there seems to be some optimism – but they will likely need another.
In that regard, a chance could emerge to acquire Merih Demiral from Juventus.
According to Calciomercatoweb, the Serie A side have no place in their plans for the Turkey international. Concurrently, they retain an interest in Chelsea midfielder Jorginho.
Hence, Juventus could try to orchestrate a swap deal involving the pair. In theory, it would give both clubs what they desire.
From Chelsea’s perspective, adding another defender would be pivotal. Demiral has never played in the Premier League, but is also admired by Newcastle.
He spent the 2021-22 season on loan with Atalanta. However, after missing out on European qualification, they will not activate their €18million (£15.4m) option to buy.
Therefore, Demiral will have to find a new destination this summer. Chelsea could be his takers, if they are willing to sacrifice Jorginho.
Although the Italy international serves as their vice-captain, he is entering the final year of his contract. If he does not sign a new deal, it may make sense to sell the 30-year-old.
Juventus are long-term admirers. Even though they are ready to welcome Paul Pogba back to their midfield, they could target Jorginho too.
Calciomercatoweb speculate a midfield trio of Jorginho, Pogba and Manuel Locatelli, with Denis Zakaria as a rotation option. It would be a much stronger mid-section than Juventus have had in recent years.
Could Chelsea cope with Jorginho exit?
Chelsea would then have to work out how to replace any void left by their deep-lying playmaker.
Also among their midfield ranks are the likes of N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek; Conor Gallagher could also have a chance of reintegration after his latest loan spell away.
Jorginho agent says Chelsea stay is priority
Chelsea midfielder is reportedly set to stay in London this summer and not move back to Serie A
Jorginho’s traits have been unique to that group, but they arguably have enough options to try out a different composition in their engine room.
What’s more, a swap deal between Jorginho and Demiral – if it was to materialise – would likely favour the Blues financially. Hence, they could be left with some funds to help their other transfer activity.
