Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic missed a glaring opportunity as the Blues were held to a 1-1 draw by Leicester City at Stamford Bridge.
Hakim Ziyech had the first chance of the match when he turned away from Daniel Amartey in the fifth minute and got into a good shooting position. However, the Moroccan winger could only send his low drive wide of the mark.
Leicester were ahead just moments later, in their first attack of the game. Kasper Schmeichel sent a long ball up the pitch, and Marcos Alonso was slow to react. Timothy Castagne reached it and the ball then fell to James Maddison. He got away from Thiago Silva before firing a venomous strike into the bottom corner.
The next shot of the match fell to a surprise candidate – right centre-back Trevoh Chalobah. The Englishman forced Schmeichel into an acrobatic save with a powerful effort from 25 yards out.
Romelu Lukaku had a good opportunity for Chelsea after being sent through on goal by N’Golo Kante in the 16th minute. But the Belgian striker took too long in possession and Amartey slid in to block.
The home side began to dominate proceedings, although Leicester soaked the pressure up well. By the 33rd minute, the Foxes’ only shot on target had them in front at Stamford Bridge.
However, Chelsea got level thanks to left wing-back Marcos Alonso. Reece James chipped towards the back post, and Alonso was there to smash past Schmeichel at his near post.
Lukaku had another sight at goal after the break. Ziyech picked him out with a delightful cross, and Lukaku rose above Amartey to meet it. However, the attacker sent his header off target.
Chelsea had a brilliant chance to go in front soon afterwards. Following some nice play in midfield, James sent Lukaku off into the box. He then squared it for Christian Pulisic. But with the goal at his mercy, Pulisic somehow managed to miss the ball completely.
In the 64th minute, Brendan Rodgers changed his forward line by taking off Kelechi Iheanacho and replacing him with Harvey Barnes.
Leicester’s defending became more desperate as Chelsea sent players forward and Rudiger stung the palms of Schmeichel with a left-footed effort.
Pulisic replaced after glaring miss
Pulisic was hauled off with 72 minutes gone as Thomas Tuchel brought skipper Cesar Azpilicueta on. The German also replaced Kante with Ruben Loftus-Cheek in midfield.
Another good chance came Chelsea’s way as Leicester struggled to deal with a set piece – which has been the story of their season.
Chalobah rose highest to head at goal from a corner, but Schmeichel was relieved to see it come straight at him. He caught the ball as Leicester were let off the hook by Chelsea once again.
Both teams made changes with 12 minutes remaining. Ayoze Perez came on for Jamie Vardy, while Kai Havertz replaced Lukaku.
Chelsea pressed for a second goal but couldn’t find one as Leicester held firm. The draw means Chelsea have yet to confirm third spot in the Premier League, although Tottenham are very unlikely to match their goal difference on the final day.
Leicester, meanwhile, are on course for a top-10 finish. They currently sit ninth with 49 points from 37 games.
