Liverpool poised to move for Chelsea fan favourite as talks over new contract hit roadblock

Chelsea have reportedly stepped up their efforts to tie down Mason Mount to a new contract amid growing links to a move to Liverpool at the end of the season.

The English midfielder has 18 months remaining on his current deal and negotiations for an extension are ongoing, but speculation suggests the Blues have so far fallen short of his wage demands.

It would be a huge blow for Chelsea to lose one of their top players to a Premier League rival, so understandably Graham Potter is keen to resolve this issue as soon as possible.

For Liverpool fans, however, this is potentially great news. Jurgen Klopp has made no secret that the Reds need quality midfield reinforcements, with Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham at the top of his shortlist.

Mount would be another excellent option for the German coach to have at his disposal next season, while Liverpool are also looking to sign a midfielder this winter to fill in for the rest of the current campaign.

The 24-year-old has been a key player for Chelsea for several years now, after breaking into the first team in the 2019/20 season under Frank Lampard.

Since he has solidified his place in the squad. Overall, he has made 186 appearances for the Blues, scoring 33 goals and making 37 assists, giving him an impressive average of 0.38 goal contributions per match.

The midfielder has also been key to the club’s recent success, helping Chelsea to win a Champions League, a UEFA Super Cup, a FIFA Club World Cup and an FA Cup during the reign of Thomas Tuchel.

This season, he has once again been trusted by Graham Potter and has played all but one of the Blues league matches, scoring three goals and assisting twice.

Chelsea still pushing for new Mount deal amid Liverpool interest

According to The Guardian, Mount is unsatisfied with his current £75,000-a-week wage and wants Todd Boehly and co to prove that they value him.

Chelsea are allegedly willing to make a sizeable offer, but terms would need to be pitched at a ‘reasonable level.’

Negotiations are set to resume in the upcoming days, with the Blues desperate to keep hold of Mount, who has been at the West London club since he was six years old.

Potter is also looking to improve his midfield this winter, after making his former player – Brighton’s Moises Caicedo – one of his top targets.

Indeed, with Chelsea having a poor start to the season, they currently have a 10-point gap to bridge with the top four, so the current window is key for Potter.

After hijacking Arsenal’s deal for Ukrainian wonderkid Mykhaylo Mudryk, it also looks likely that they will announce the signing of Noni Madueke in the near future, which will give Potter another solid attacking option.

But as for Mount, Liverpool will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye to see how his contract talks develop and are ready to launch a summer bid for the Englishman should Chelsea fail to agree on a new deal.
