Lukaku rejected shock Tottenham switch for one reason, as pathway to Chelsea, Inter transfer emerges

The reason why Romelu Lukaku spurned an Antonio Conte reunion at Tottenham has surfaced, while a report has detailed Chelsea and Inter’s demands over a summer switch.

The Belgian hitman, 29, endured a difficult first season back at Stamford Bridge. Lukaku arrived for a club-record £97.5m fee with hopes high he’d help Chelsea break up Liverpool and Man City’s domestic dominance.

He bagged 15 goals in 44 matches across all competitions, though that is far below what was expected of such an expensive buy.

Lukaku became his own worst enemy late in 2021 when comments criticising Thomas Tuchel’s system usage of him emerged in the Italian media.

Fast forward to present day, there is very real talk he may depart after just one season back in blue.

Inter Milan appear the likeliest candidate to forge a deal. However, the chances of them paying anything close to the fee Chelsea received are remote.

That’s opened the door for Bayern Munich to pounce if Robert Lewandowski departs. The latest on the Lukaku saga – including an apparent meeting with his lawyer – can be found here.

Lukaku was at his best at Inter under current Spurs boss, Antonio Conte. Tottenham – through the Conte link – have been linked with a move for the Belgian by varying outlets in Italy.

Now, Italian journalist, Fabio Bergomi, has shed new light on what the future holds for Lukaku.

Why Lukaku spurned Spurs explained

Bergomi claimed Lukaku has rejected the idea of linking back up with Conte at Spurs due to his desire to be the main man in attack.

With Harry Kane leading the line and Son Heung-min getting better with age, Lukaku could never stake that claim in north London.

Additionally, Bergomi outlined both Chelsea and Inter’s stance over a summer switch back to the San Siro.

“I won’t be able to say everything because I can’t, but on Lukaku there is total convergence,” Bergomi said (via Sport Witness).

“The news has been silenced, he only wants Inter, he doesn’t want any other solution. I give you a total gem: he also rejected Conte’s Tottenham. He wants the Nerazzurri because he would be the leader.

“The formula that I learned today is that of the very high onerous loan, Chelsea want at least €20m of onerous loan. Inter want to get him for around €80/90m, paying €20m and postponing the rest over the years.

“What’s the problem? Not everyone knows that at Inter there is a great leader who is Dzeko. Or Dzeko has the maturity to understand to make way for Lukaku, otherwise there could be frictions.”

Should Chelsea sever ties?

Lukaku’s numbers were by no means disastrous. However, he appears a poor fit for Tuchel’s system and the Blues looked far more potent with the more mobile Kai Havertz up top.

At 29, Lukaku’s value will only decrease in the coming years and Chelsea do have an option to re-sign Tammy Abraham from Roma for £68m in 2023.

The type of deal Inter are seeking – an initial loan followed by annual instalments – would do little to benefit Chelsea in the present.

Though if they are ultimately able to recoup a sizeable chunk of Lukaku’s outlay in the long run, they may be wise to cut bait while they can.
