Chelsea may ‘be willing to sacrifice’ Christian Pulisic in the January window, and Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle United are ‘monitoring developments’.
After a £58million transfer, both Pulisic and Chelsea would have expected a lot from their time together. However, for a few reasons, things have not panned out that way.
The American’s first season at the club showed what he was about. Indeed, Pulisic scored nine Premier League goals and provided six assists in 25 games.
The following season, he played more games (27), but had less of an impact. Indeed, he was directly involved in just six goals in the league.
Last season, under Thomas Tuchel, his role dwindled. After an injury early on in the season, he was afforded just 22 league games and only 13 from the start.
The six goals and two assists he managed cannot be seen as a bad return given the amount of games he played.
He was clearly frustrated with how he was being utilised by Tuchel. A change in manager earlier this season might have changed how he was viewed at Stamford Bridge.
His two goal contributions in the league this season have come under Graham Potter. However, he has started just twice in the league under the former Brighton manager.
Chelsea could cut their losses with Pulisic
As such, it seems the winger might still not be happy with the role he is playing for Chelsea.
A report from the Daily Mail suggests he is ‘understood to be equally as frustrated’ as he was when Tuchel was at the helm.
It also states that there has been ‘no noise’ regarding a renewal of his contract. Should that be the case, his deal will run out at the end of next season.
Rather than let that happen, Chelsea might be willing to see him leave this season. Indeed, the report suggests he ‘may be’ a player the club are ‘willing to sacrifice’, as they have their own intentions regarding signings in January.
Man Utd, Arsenal, Newcastle on alert
There are three clubs linked with Pulisic, as per the report: Man Utd, Arsenal and Newcastle. It suggests each of those clubs are ‘monitoring developments’ regarding the winger.
Those make sense, given both Man Utd and Newcastle approached Chelsea in the summer.
The report states the Blues ‘will look for around £35million’ should Pulisic be sold in January. A fee in that region would be no problem for any of those sides.
That could mean that there is to be a battle for the transfer of the American. Indeed, he would offer something to each of the interested sides.
United clearly need more attacking prowess with Cristiano Ronaldo leaving. If Marcus Rashford is required to lead the line, a quality wide player to support him would be ideal for United, and Pulisic could be that.
For Newcastle, he could become one of their star men. Clearly, he is a quality player, and one with Premier League experience, so they could utilise his skills as they attempt to remain at the top end of the table.
For Arsenal, Pulisic would likely be used in the same role as he is at Chelsea. Indeed, they are top of the league, and their attacking trio is in great form.
As such, Pulisic might favour a move to either of the other sides. It will certainly be interesting to see what happens when the January window opens. A move away seems likely given his current role at Chelsea.
