Erling Haaland during Freiburg v Borussia Dortmund

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has revealed that the club have openly discussed a headline-grabbing transfer for striker Erling Haaland.

The 21-year-old has made himself one of the most exciting talents in Europe following his recent rise. Indeed, after starring for RB Salzburg, he had interest from several clubs including Manchester United.

However, he picked Borussia Dortmund in December 2019 and he has since hit 70 goals in 69 games.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has kept transfer tabs on his fellow Norwegian Haaland. The striker reportedly has a release clause worth £64million in his contract which activates next summer.

But Chelsea considered his signing this summer before they opted to bring in Romelu Lukaku.

Nevertheless, in an interview with Bild (via Sport Witness), Blues boss Tuchel revealed frank discussions about a move for Haaland.

“We talked about Erling Haaland a couple of times, including during the transfer window. But then it seemed absolutely unrealistic and not at all feasible,” the manager said.

“We talk about him regularly, of course, because he’s a fantastic player and clearly the defining figure at Dortmund, who is a big rival for us in the Champions League.”

Tuchel also said that he would have “no problem” fitting Haaland in his team alongside Lukaku, despite only recently spending £97.5million on the Belgian.

He added: “You mean two at the top [with] Lukaku and Haaland? We can talk about it (laughs)!

“I don’t think we’ve been really serious about it yet, but let’s see what will happen in the next few weeks.”

Chelsea have few gaps in their squad and Lukaku’s arrival plugged the only noticeable one. However, Chelsea and Manchester City have a reputation of continuing to spend big to constantly improve.

In other news, Haaland has reportedly let slip that he thinks a move to the Premier League would be perfect for his career.

Haaland chose Germany as his next destination after leaving Austria as he saw the best development pathway.

However, he has now proved himself in the Bundesliga and the Champions League and he could well move on next summer with his release clause.

According to a report, he believes a move to the English top flight would be his perfect next step.
