Mason Mount: Graham Potter makes ‘complicated’ admission about Chelsea contract for Liverpool target

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount

Chelsea head coach Graham Potter has admitted the negotiations between the club and Mason Mount over a longer contract have been “complicated” so far.

Mount is due to reach the end of his current contract with Chelsea by the end of next season. Therefore, the club might have to sell him if he does not renew his contract. There have been talks in that regard, but very little progress has been made.

Amid the stalemate, Mount has become a target for other clubs. For example, Liverpool have identified him as a potential reinforcement as they aim to evolve their midfield.

There have also been recent links with Manchester United and Man City, while reports in Spain have even suggested he could be sent to Atletico Madrid as a makeweight for a permanent Joao Felix deal in the opposite direction.

Clearly, the Mount situation is something that needs to be resolved. But his future seems to be all to play for as the summer transfer window approaches.

Now, Potter has opened up on Mount’s future, which he admits has become “complicated”.

Potter told a press conference – in view of Chelsea’s upcoming game against Southampton – on Friday: “It’s always complicated, there is always negotiations.

“It’s best I leave it between Mason and the club, that is the best way for that to be dealt with as far as I’m concerned.

“He’s been fantastic to work with, an important player for us, and of course, I hope it gets resolved quickly.”

Potter might not get to manage Mason Mount much longer

Since Potter took charge of Chelsea, Mount has made 23 appearances. In that time, he has scored three goals and added six assists.

Overall across his Chelsea career, the academy graduate has registered 190 appearances, 33 goals and 37 assists.

Meanwhile, at international level, Mount has earned 36 caps for England, contributing five goals and assists apiece.

Yet the 24-year-old has divided opinion throughout his career. Therefore, perhaps a new challenge away from Chelsea could give him a different way to prove himself.

Mount is undoubtedly a talented player, no matter what his detractors believe. At the age of 24, it is about time for him to prove it consistently, which he can be capable of.

Extending his stay with Chelsea would be an acceptable decision if he is going to have a prominent enough role. But it seems there are a few factors weighing on Mount’s mind at the moment.

After all, Chelsea have made major changes to their squad over the past couple of transfer windows. He will want to be sure of his place before making any kind of commitment.

If instead he opts to leave, Liverpool might be a good solution for him. They are another big club who need players with his kind of skillset.

Hence, there are plenty of factors at play when it comes to Mount’s future. It is understandable why Potter would want to keep him at Stamford Bridge, but that is far from a foregone conclusion.
