Chelsea and England star Mason Mount says he has made great strides in the last 12 months and is more willing than ever to do the “dirty work” for club and country.
Mount has matured into one of Gareth Southgate’s go-to players for crucial England games. The attacking midfielder has also proved a crucial attacking cog for Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea. Mount has enjoyed a productive last 12 months with Champions League glory and Super Cup success for his club. He featured heavily in both games and has continued his club form this season.
In between seasons, Mount suffered the agony of a European Championship final defeat to Italy. Again, he was a starter and played 99 minutes of the 120-minute final at Wembley, which England lost on penalties.
L’Equipe via Sport Witness have interviewed Mount and asked him about his progress and the despair at losing to Italy.
“After the Champions League victory, I quickly switched to the Euros, which did not end as we had hoped. This is football: sometimes you get very high, but suddenly you can go very low,” he said.
Thiago Silva wants Chelsea to sign Real Madrid's Eder Militao
Thiago Silva is said to want Chelsea to sign Real Madrid's Eder Militao, with more news on Antonio Rudiger and Edinson Cavani.
“After the Euros, I thought about it [defeat in the final] for several days, it took me a little while to get over it physically and mentally.
“We had a short vacation and then we had to follow up with Chelsea’s pre-season. Putting all that in the back of his mind in a bid to get off to a better start.”
Mount doing the ‘dirty work’
Mount, 22, who is only in his third season in the Premier League, also concedes the need to improve his game defensively.
“In one year, I have improved a lot and gained confidence in myself. As I got into the Premier League, I realised that I could do great things. Also, I often take time to study my game and think about how I could improve,” Mount added.
“I must not let three or four games go by without being involved in a goal. In the Premier League, you often only have a chance or two to score per game. And I must miss as little as possible. I have to analyse the matches better to put my team-mates in the best possible condition, in order to help them score.
“If you end a season with more than 10 goals and more than 10 assists, that necessarily means that you had a huge influence.
“Afterwards, as my father always told me, a good offensive player also has to do the dirty work, which is to contribute to the defensive work.”
