Mason Mount tipped to change Chelsea decision with Liverpool transfer ‘favourites’ over Arsenal

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount

A three-horse race is developing to take Mason Mount away from Chelsea, though a report has revealed he could be on the verge of a U-turn regarding his future.

Mount is approaching the final year of his contract at Chelsea, where he came through the academy ranks. Now an established first-team star and regular England international, the midfielder is yet to commit to renewing his stay at Stamford Bridge.

The uncertainty over his future has led to links with Liverpool, Arsenal and Bayern Munich. Those three contenders remain in the hunt to sign him, according to Football Insider, which names Liverpool as the ‘favourites’.

However, the online outlet is now reporting that Chelsea are gaining ‘confidence’ that Mount will actually sign a new contract with them.

The club have changed the structure of their renewal offer to the 24-year-old, per the latest report. On top of a base salary of £100,000 per week, Chelsea are now willing to pay Mount substantial bonuses related to his gametime and goalscoring.

In turn, his earnings could come closer to those of Chelsea’s highest earners, such as fellow academy graduate Reece James.

It has been one of the obstacles holding Mount back from signing a new contract. Furthermore, he has reportedly been sceptical about the length of contracts Chelsea have been handing out.

But Mount might now be more open to extending his Chelsea career, which so far has brought 195 appearances, 33 goals, 37 assists and three trophies.

This season, he has played 35 times in all competitions, scoring three goals and adding six assists.

Mason Mount ready to play under Pochettino

It has been a challenging campaign for Chelsea as a whole. Head coaches Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter have both been sacked along the way.

Mount is currently playing under the guidance of caretaker manager Frank Lampard, who previously helped launch his career with Derby County and Chelsea.

Beyond this season, the club are closing in on the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as a successor to Lampard. According to Football Insider, Mount believes that will be a positive development.

Chelsea have told Mount that he will have a key role in the team they are building. Feeling central to the project, the former Vitesse loanee might be encouraged to stay after all.

If not, he will have three options for his next club after Manchester City and Newcastle United withdrew from the race.

Per the report, Liverpool and Arsenal are ‘preparing to submit bids’ for Mount. How much they would be willing to pay remains unclear.

Liverpool are planning an overhaul of their midfield this summer. Arsenal, meanwhile, need to reinforce the more defensive side of that department, but are open to picking up a creative option like Mount as well.

Alternatively, he could head abroad for the second time in his career. Ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has been tipped to take him to Bayern Munich.

It would be an interesting move for Mount, but if Chelsea can guarantee him a prominent role, perhaps he should continue his journey there.

If not, though, and he gets lost amid their sea of signings, Mount may have to look for an escape route. In that regard, Liverpool look like a good fit, but he would have to consider all his options.

Arsenal and Bayern are much more likely to have Champions League football on offer next season, which might make them appealing.

Interestingly, Mount is not the only Chelsea midfielder to be linked with a Tuchel reunion…
