Chelsea ‘need’ three signings, as pundit claims it ‘wouldn’t bother’ him if big name never played for club again

Chelsea need to sign up to three players before the transfer window closes, according to a pundit who wouldn’t be bothered if one big name never played for the club again.

It has been a challenging start to the season for Chelsea, who lost to Southampton on Tuesday night. It was their second defeat of the season so far in the Premier League after five games.

In turn, head coach Thomas Tuchel has admitted his side have become a bit too easy to beat in recent weeks. But there could be time to rectify any concerns via the transfer market.

Tuchel has recently hinted that Chelsea might not bring anyone else in. However, that was before they finally had an offer accepted for Leicester City defender, Wesley Fofana.

Simultaneously, they have been working on deals for Everton winger Anthony Gordon and Barcelona striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The loss to Southampton highlighted how they may need to replenish their ranks further after a summer of change. For their former player Scott Minto, more reinforcements are required, since some existing options are not up to standard.

Minto told talkSPORT: “I think that Thomas Tuchel did all that he can with what he had on the bench. He went from a three, to a four, to a three again and bringing on all his attacking players that he thought he could in terms of senior professionals, but they just weren’t good enough.

“For me, Hakim Ziyech, it wouldn’t bother me if he didn’t play for Chelsea again. It was difficult for Christian Pulisic coming on but again, he’s another player who has flattered to deceive over the last 18 months or so.

Minto addresses two or three Chelsea needs

“Chelsea need another central defender and they need an out-and-out striker. And listening to you guys talk about Anthony Gordon, maybe they need him playing with passion as well as skill and technique as well.

“At the moment they have a lot of ‘flair players’, but they’re not getting on the ball. And in the second half it was Southampton who stepped it up and fully deserved the three points in the end.

“It was disappointing for Chelsea and it’s going to be an interesting last couple of days before the transfer window finishes.”

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will succeed in any of their pursuits. Former boss Frank Lampard, now in charge of Everton, has warned them off Gordon.

However, there may yet be progress in terms of outgoings. Ziyech, who has been inconsistent in two seasons at Stamford Bridge as Minto has acknowledged, could return to Ajax as a replacement for Manchester United arrival, Antony.

Pulisic has also been linked with an exit this summer. But he probably will stay unless there is a late twist in the transfer window.
