Graham Potter warned he has a ‘waste of time’ player at Chelsea, with decision to show ugly side of star

Chelsea boss Graham Potter may see an ugly side of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang once he begins to rotate his team, according to Andy Townsend.

The Blues signed the former Arsenal striker in the summer to bolster their front line. They added ex-Manchester City star Raheem Sterling earlier in the transfer window, but Chelsea wanted more.

And it was Potter’s predecessor, Thomas Tuchel, who wished to reunite with Aubameyang. Potter has nevertheless struck up a solid relationship with the striker.

Aubameyang has scored three goals in the past three games to help the London club win four matches in a row. And two of those goals helped Chelsea beat AC Milan in back-to-back Champions League ties as the Blues got a grip on their group.

However, Townsend has warned that Aubameyang is like a ticking time bomb due to what happened with him at Arsenal.

The 33-year-old fell out with Mikel Arteta, who gladly shipped him off to Barcelona in January.

“Let’s be honest, he was playing like walking football at the end of his time at Arsenal,” Townsend told talkSPORT.

“Every time I used to watch him I used to think ‘he doesn’t run around’. Great goalscorer, fantastic record, I understand all of that.

“But unless you want to charge about with it, you’re a waste of time in modern day Premier League football. What will define Aubameyang for him at Chelsea, as an older player, if he gets left out, I will be very interested to see his reaction.”

Aubameyang yet to show true traits

Aubameyang has proved a deadly goalscorer wherever he has played.

He shot to fame at Borussia Dortmund under Jurgen Klopp and Tuchel, scoring 141 goals in 213 games.

Then he moved to Arsenal, where he hit 92 strikes in 163 matches.

Aubameyang has since made a strong start at Chelsea, but Townsend has warned that it may not last.

“He will get left out. There will come a point where things aren’t going great and Graham might want to shake things up,” the pundit added.

“He might think he needs a little bit more energy up the top line. I think he’s important for them, but I’m intrigued to know how it will go if it goes in the other direction.”

Chelsea need to find long-term solution

Aubameyang is certainly a strong option for goalscoring talent and he has the capacity to fire his team to silverware.

Indeed, he helped Arsenal win the FA Cup with his goals.

But, he has shown he has a mean streak in him and that ultimately affected his time in north London.

Now that he has moved to west London, he is still not a long-term option as he turns 34 next summer.

Chelsea have a history of their strikers struggling and it will soon be time to find a successor to Aubameyang.
