Chelsea plotting Spain international raid to oust Tuchel favourite who has two reasons to fear

Spain and Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez

A Chelsea star who was undroppable under Thomas Tuchel is fearing for his future after a report revealed a potential new signing and a player already at the club could both oust him.

Chelsea have six weeks to stew over a dismal run-in to the World Cup break. The Blues lost three straight and went win-less in their last five league matches to leave them languishing in eighth place.

While by no means a decisive factor, losing in-form Kepa Arrizalabaga to a foot injury hamstrung Graham Potter’s side down the stretch.

Kepa had grasped a rare chance in the league with both hands following a knee injury suffered by Edouard Mendy.

Kepa performed miracles between the sticks, notably pulling off several eye-catching saves in the 2-0 win over Aston Villa on October 16.

However, he later suffered an injury to the sole of his foot that saw Mendy regain his place for the last four matches.

Kepa the first of two Mendy problems

Chelsea won none of them, and the Daily Mail report Kepa may be installed as Graham Potter’s No 1 again after the World Cup.

Per the newspaper, that’s led to the 30-year-old Mendy harbouring fears his time at Chelsea could be coming to an end. Indeed, Stamford Bridge may not be the place to be for the Senegalese if he isn’t a regular starter.

What’s more, Mendy’s future could come to a head next summer at which point he’ll have two years remaining on his deal.

His current contract expires in the summer of 2025, and it’s noted the club’s early efforts to forge an extension did not bear fruit with the player’s representatives.

In further bad news for Mendy, the Mail report Graham Potter could look to reunite with a goalkeeper he knows well from Brighton – Robert Sanchez.

Potter/Sanchez reunion may have to go through Man Utd

The 24-year-old is one of Brighton’s most consistent performers and was recently rewarded with a place in Luis Enrique’s Spain squad for Qatar.

That call-up came at the expense of David de Gea, showcasing how highly Sanchez is thought of at elite level.

Sanchez is also a target for Manchester United, per the Mirror. The Red Devils will soon have a decision to make on De Gea who is out of contract next summer.

United do hold an option for a further 12 months, but the Athletic are among a host of outlets to report United are considering a younger option who is better suited to Erik ten Hag’s system. In other words, the Dutchman wants a goalkeeper who is as comfortable with his feet as he is with his hands.

Chelsea too like what they see in Sanchez, with their interest most likely stemming from Potter.

Indeed, The Mail conclude Potter is interested in raiding his former club for the rising stopper.

Either way, whether a new keeper is signed or whether Kepa re-establishes himself as the No 1, the writing looks to be on the wall for Mendy.
