Chelsea pose sudden threat to lower-ranking Prem side in striker pursuit that seemed all tied up

Matheus Cunha, Joao Felix, Atletico Madrid, October 2022

Chelsea could be attracted by the chance to sign Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid, according to a report.

After Armando Broja suffered a serious injury that will rule him out for the rest of the season, Chelsea are aware of a lack of depth up front. Right now, they only have Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang or Kai Havertz to lead the line. In truth, the latter is more of an attacking midfielder, even if he has shown he can be capable of being the focal point too.

With the January transfer window approaching, Chelsea might be looking at their options in the market. Although Broja’s injury is a blow, it may actually have come at a good time for the club – if there is such a thing – so they can react by making a signing in the following month.

In that regard, there have already been a few suggestions about which strikers Chelsea might be going for. Some of the contenders are Youssoufa Moukoko, Joao Felix and Memphis Depay.

All three get a mention in the latest report from the Evening Standard. But the London-based source also adds Felix’s Atletico Madrid teammate Cunha into contention.

According to the report, Chelsea have not only been offered the chance to sign Felix, but Cunha as well.

Felix is out of favour in the Spanish capital. Therefore, the Portugal international is looking for a new club. Manchester United are eager to win the race to sign him, though.

Meanwhile, Cunha is even further down Diego Simeone’s pecking order. Atletico need to raise funds after their exit from the Champions League. Thus, they are willing to offload both the Portuguese and the Brazilian.

Cunha has been heavily linked with Wolves, to the point where some outlets have suggested there is an agreement for him to move to Molineux.

But it might not have reached a conclusion just yet. Other clubs, like Leeds United, have also been taking a look at the 23-year-old.

Chelsea could be receptive to Matheus Cunha transfer idea

Now, Chelsea have emerged as another potential taker for Cunha. According to the report, they have been offered his services by Atletico and they could now consider hijacking Wolves’ attempts to sign him.

That said, claims are emerging elsewhere – from respected sources – that they have agreed to sign another attacker, David Datro Fofana, from Molde.

Fofana is a younger option who has potential for the future. It remains to be seen if Chelsea will want someone more established for the here and now as well.

They also have a deal to sign the versatile attacking midfielder Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig in the pipeline for next summer. While Broja is recovering, though, they need reinforcements midway through the season.

With that in mind, Cunha has come onto their radar. His record with Atletico hasn’t been particularly impressive, with just seven goals from 54 games.

But at his age, the South American still has potential. Perhaps he could fulfil it at Chelsea if they firmed up their interest. For now, though, they seem to be focusing on Fofana – and Cunha on Wolves.

With Chelsea hovering, though, the former RB Leipzig man might just be wanting to wait and see if anything else develops on that front.
