Raheem Sterling is reportedly ‘excited’ about joining Chelsea as their transfer talks with Manchester City enter the final stage.
Sterling is preparing to leave Manchester City after seven successful years at the Etihad. He joined them from Liverpool in a £49million deal and has gone on to win four Premier League titles and one FA Cup. Plus, he has lifted five league cup trophies while playing under Pep Guardiola.
According to reports, Sterling will leave City due to a concern over a lack of playing time. He is regularly in the starting eleven but faces strong competition for places from the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva.
Gabriel Jesus joining Arsenal will have helped his cause. But Sterling wants to link up with a new club where he is guaranteed to start every big match and not be affected by Guardiola’s rotation.
The timing fits in with the Qatar World Cup. Sterling, 27, will want to be in top form to start for England at the tournament, which begins in November.
The Englishman is set to join Thomas Tuchel’s side for £45m – a little bit less than City paid for him in 2015.
Sterling is said to be ‘excited’ about signing for Chelsea and moving back to London. He hasn’t lived there since swapping QPR for Liverpool as a teenager in 2010.
Raheem Sterling to take part in pre-season games
Should the move go through as planned, then the wide man will join up with Chelsea for their pre-season tour of the United States.
Their first match is against Club America on July 16. This gives a rough indication of when Chelsea owner Todd Boehly wants the deal done by.
Tuchel reportedly wants two wingers this summer, so Sterling will fulfil part of that ambition.
Does Raheem Sterling to Chelsea make sense?
Will Raheem Sterling be Todd Boehly's marquee summer signing?
It is a great move for Chelsea as Sterling still has plenty of years left at the top level. And he is a proven Premier League goalscorer, having hit 23 in the competition over the last two seasons.
The Blues are also hoping to bring in Raphinha as their other winger and Matthijs de Ligt to bolster the defence. But they are facing complications with both transfers.
