Chelsea use Liverpool, Sadio Mane transfer talks as Raheem Sterling guide, with ‘compromise’ fee quoted

Chelsea are using Liverpool’s talks with Bayern Munich over Sadio Mane as a guide in their pursuit of Raheem Sterling, according to a report.

The Blues are chasing a new attacking signing, with Manchester City’s Sterling their chief target. The 27-year-old is entering the final year of his deal but is considering his future as he approaches the prime of his career.

Doubt over his importance to Pep Guardiola has arisen following the arrivals of Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez.

And Chelsea feel they can convince him to join their project, with Sterling reportedly asking about life at the club and about Thomas Tuchel as a manager.

Chelsea can afford Sterling’s wages and will be in an even more comfortable position in that regard once Romelu Lukaku seals a return to Inter on loan.

However, the transfer fee will prove the major stumbling block. Sky Sports therefore reports that Chelsea are using Mane as a guide to their negotiations with City.

Mane is leaving Liverpool for Bayern for £35million. However, City will demand ‘much more’ for Sterling – likely over £50million – given the differences between the players.

Sterling is three years younger than Mane and would be moving across the Premier League instead. That alone, even without the fact that he would be moving to a title rival, would add a premium to the fee.

Previous reports in Italy claimed that Chelsea had hopes of securing a deal for around £35million.

But given City’s firm stance, the Stamford Bridge club now reckon £45million would be a good ‘compromise’ fee.

Sterling has scored 109 goals in his 320 Premier League appearances and could help solve the Blues’ scoring issues. Chelsea started last season well, but inconsistency soon set in in their performances.

Sterling has proved a rock-solid part of all the success Guardiola has enjoyed as City manager.

He has helped win four Premier League titles, five League Cups and the FA Cup while at the Etihad Stadium.

However, as he approaches his prime, he would be better off looking for a new challenge.

Raheem Sterling to Chelsea makes sense

Raheem Sterling has been linked with a move to Chelsea.

Sterling could of course stay at City next season and help them try to finally win the Champions League. But the longer he goes without a new contract, the more the club are at risk of losing him for free next summer.

Chelsea’s main aim is to win the Premier League again. The last time they clinched top spot was in 2017 under Antonio Conte.

After clinching four Premier League titles already, helping City’s title rivals finish top would raise Sterling’s stock in the top flight even more.
