Report names two Chelsea victims of ruthless Todd Boehly purge as chairman aims to raise £100m for FFP

Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly wants to sell two big-name stars this summer in order to raise £100million and appease Financial Fair Play regulators, according to a report.
Chelsea have gone on an incredible spending spree since a Boehly-led consortium bought the club from Roman Abramovich in May last year. Top players such as Enzo Fernandez, Mykhaylo Mudryk, Joao Felix, Raheem Sterling and Marc Cucurella have arrived at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea’s most expensive signing under Boehly is Fernandez, who cost a British record £107million when joining from Benfica.
The huge spending has given manager Graham Potter a brilliant squad filled with talented stars. However, Potter is struggling to keep all of his players happy as so many of them feel they should be starting for Chelsea. Therefore, Boehly is expected to let a number of senior players go to give Potter a core group he can rely on.
Another reason Boehly needs to offload a few players this summer is to avoid FFP sanctions. According to Football Insider, the west London outfit have recorded losses of £121m and must therefore balance the books by receiving money for some current stars.
Many fans would expect the squad outcasts to be some of the first to go. This includes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Hakim Ziyech, Edouard Mendy and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. But Football Insider claim Boehly could actually axe two players who have been regulars in the Chelsea first team in recent years.
The first is English midfielder Mason Mount. He would never normally be up for sale due to him playing a crucial role in the club’s success under previous manager Thomas Tuchel, plus the fact he is an academy graduate who is loved at Stamford Bridge.

However, Mount is in a contract stand-off with the club. He wants to become one of the best-paid players in the Chelsea squad, but Boehly is unwilling to meet his demands. And with Mount’s current contract expiring in June 2024, there is the real chance the 24-year-old could leave on a free transfer next summer.
To prevent this, Boehly will do all he can to sell Mount this summer and bring in some money for him. Liverpool are keeping tabs on the situation and could now submit an offer.
Mateo Kovacic could follow Mason Mount out of Chelsea
Another midfielder Boehly wants to offload is Mateo Kovacic. The Croatia international has been used regularly by Potter this season and has even been made captain on occasion.
But like Mount, Kovacic is out of contract in summer 2024 and there is uncertainty over whether he will agree an extension.
Boehly knows that Kovacic is a coveted player and that Chelsea should therefore be able to agree a big-money exit for him. TEAMtalk understands that Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool are all interested in signing Kovacic.
Football Insider reveal that Chelsea are hoping to raise £100m from Mount and Kovacic’s departures. This will write off a big chunk of their recent losses and help to prevent a possible FFP sanction.
While Mount and Kovacic could leave Chelsea, reports in Spain suggest Boehly wants to bring a Barcelona ace to the Premier League.
