Sullen Chelsea star backed to find his feet again by captain Cesar Azpilicueta

Romelu Lukaku, Chelsea, January 2022.

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta has backed Romelu Lukaku to find his feet, despite the tough period he is enduring at the moment.

Lukaku was expected to hit the ground running after Chelsea paid a record fee to prise him from Inter Milan. Indeed, the Belgian scored 23 goals in Serie A in the 2019/20 season and followed that up by bagging 24 in the following campaign.

He did get off to a decent start, scoring three goals in his first three Premier League games. What’s more, he scored the only goal against Zenit in the Blues’ Champions League opener.

However, his form has stagnated following spells on the sidelines due to injury and Covid-19. Lukaku has scored just twice in the Premier League since his return to the side, and has not found the net in the last four games in the league.

The 28-year-old did not help matters when he admitted he was “not happy” at Chelsea.

Lukaku touched the ball just seven times in Chelsea’s last league game. Thomas Tuchel dropped him for Chelsea’s Champions League last-16 first leg against Lille in the week.

However, Azpilicueta feels the talisman will be able to work through this difficult period, and find his feet once again.

“Yes, I have no doubts that Romelu will show his qualities for the team. He’s having a tough period,” he said via The Mirror.

Eden Hazard may come back to Chelsea as Real Madrid want him gone and both clubs are discussing a deal

“But we cannot forget also that he scored two goals in the Club World Cup, in the semi-final and the final, so you know high-level players, we go through tough moments but we cannot forget also that he played a big role in the Club World Cup.”

Indeed, the Blues will hope he finds form as we enter the crucial latter stages of the season.

Lukaku not the problem, thinks Agbonlahor

Pundit Gabby Agbonlahor feels Lukaku is not to blame for his poor form. Indeed, he recalled a similar period he went through in his own Premier League career.

“I’m on Lukaku’s side,” he said.

“Sometimes it happens, when your teams have not got the ball you don’t get the touches because you’re the furthest one up the pitch.

“I get laughed at because I had nine touches in the first half against Spurs in 2015. Gary Neville and Frank Lampard were laughing about it at half-time.”

The former striker feels that Chelsea’s system does not help Lukaku.

“What can he do? If he comes out and drops into midfield like Kane people will have a go at him. He’s been told to stay up the pitch.,” he said.

That being said, the poor form is something that Lukaku will want to rectify quickly.
