Inter Milan chief reveals Romelu Lukaku feelings towards Chelsea exit, with transfer talks underway

Inter Milan chief executive Alessandro Antonello has revealed how Romelu Lukaku feels about leaving Chelsea and going back to Italy, with transfer discussions reportedly underway.

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea officials believe shipping the striker out on loan is the best way to move forward. They spent a club-record £97.5million on him just last summer, but an underwhelming campaign was to follow.

Lukaku scored 15 goals in all competitions for the Blues, but only eight of those came in the Premier League. The Belgian also had run-ins with manager Thomas Tuchel after a couple of bombshell interviews with the media.

Chelsea want £20million from Inter to let Lukaku go back to the San Siro on loan, where he enjoyed two successful seasons between 2019 and 2021.

The Blues also want a significant portion of his weekly wages paid, which are worth £300,000 per week.

But Inter aren’t the richest club in Europe and therefore cannot meet these demands. Instead, they have put a loan fee worth £7m on the table and are only willing to pay less of his salary.

Negotiations will continue over the next few weeks as all parties attempt to find a solution. If Lukaku does go, then Tuchel will likely rely on Kai Havertz up front next season.

Amid the transfer talks, Antonello claims 29-year-old Lukaku wants to leave England and compete in Serie A again.

“There is a great desire of the player to return,” Antonello said. “The economic and financial feasibility must be checked and some technical problems must be solved. We will try to do it in the necessary time.”

The fact the chief says Lukaku has a ‘great desire’ to re-join Inter suggests he is the one pushing for the move to go through.

Antonello’s comment about checking the ‘economic and financial feasibility’ is mainly referring to whether Inter have the funds to complete the deal.

Inter Milan and Chelsea close to Romelu Lukaku deal

Chelsea and Inter Milan are close to agreeing a loan move from Romelu Lukaku with an obligation to buy

They may need to restructure slightly, or sell a couple of players, to free up some money.

The Italian club already have Edin Dzeko, Joaquin Correa, Lautaro Martinez and Alexis Sanchez available in attack.

But Lukaku hit 30 goals for the club in the season they won the Serie A title – 2020-21. This means he will probably go straight into Inter’s first team, should a loan switch occur.

Meanwhile, a report has put Jorginho in line for a swap deal involving a Juventus player.
