Senior Chelsea player linked with shock Tottenham move, after being ‘insulted’ by recent contract offer

Edouard Mendy, Cesar Azpilicueta, Chelsea, August 2022

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has reportedly snubbed a new six-year contract offer, amid shock links with a move to Tottenham.

The Senegal international is back in London after returning from the World Cup, but there is still no sign of an agreement as the Blues are not showing enough ‘respect’ over his salary.

It is believed that Mendy feels insulted due to his offer falling far short of the wage of teammate and fellow keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Reportedly, Mendy earns approximately £100,000 a week, while Kepa’s contract is worth nearly double that figure.

Mendy seemingly doesn’t feel respected by Chelsea, who have now allegedly withdrawn their contract offer following the 30-year-old’s rejection.

This is according to The Sunwho shared a quote from an inside source at Stamford Bridge.

They wrote: “Edouard is back at Chelsea and he is ready to play. But, there is a feeling that the contract situation is just going nowhere.

“Edouard has won some huge trophies for Chelsea — but there is a sense that he is not being shown enough respect by the club over a new deal.”

Mendy allegedly ‘offered’ to Spurs

Mendy was awarded both the FIFA and UEFA Goalkeeper of the Year Award in 2021, having helped Chelsea win the Champions League in 2020 and most recently helped his team to lift the Club World Cup in 2021.

However, the keeper has struggled for consistent minutes under Graham Potter this season.

Mendy has started nine matches in the Premier League, while in the other six Blues boss Potter has opted for Kepa instead.

Kepa is also Potter’s favoured option in the Champions League, too, which must surely frustrate Mendy after being key to their European victory just two years ago.

The Blues player still has two-and-a-half years remaining on his current contract, but rumours of a move to Tottenham are gathering pace after the keeper was reportedly offered to Chelsea’s London rivals in November.

This is according to 90Minwho claim Antonio Conte is eyeing a move for Mendy in January.

Tottenham’s No.1 Hugo Lloris turns 36 on Boxing Day and the reality is Spurs won’t be able to rely on the Frenchman forever.

There is no solid backup goalkeeping option for Spurs, who as reported by TEAMtalk have also been linked to moves for Jordan Pickford recently.

However, a move for Mendy would come as a big surprise, given Chelsea are unlikely to sell to a rival Premier League team.

Also, the Senegal international is not fantastic at playing out from the back, with a couple of blunders already this season — and Conte reportedly wants to sign a keeper with good distribution.

Italian champions AC Milan are also said to be monitoring the situation — as are French sides Nice and Monaco, so it seems a January exit is possible amid Mendy’s rift with the Chelsea hierarchy.
