Serge Gnabry is reportedly close to signing a new Bayern Munich to put an end to Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool transfer speculation.
The 27-year-old winger has emerged in recent seasons as one of Bayern’s most prolific goalscorers. He has also become a senior Germany international, with the Qatar World Cup on the horizon.
As a result, Bayern bosses made tying Gnabry down to a new contract a key priority. He is entering his current deal’s final year. However, they have not had it all their own way, with talks proving difficult.
Previous reports revealed that Bayern were considering exiling Gnabry from the team next season if he continued to stall on a decision, therefore increasing the chance of him becoming a free agent next summer.
In response, Chelsea and Man Utd emerged as transfer options in the event Bayern needed to avoid losing him for free.
The latest update from Kicker, though, is that Gnabry is now close to signing a new contract.
Indeed, Bayern have come to the realisation that sending Gnabry to the stands would not have been a ‘very practical’ one. Fresh talks between the club, Gnabry and the player’s agent have therefore gone smoother.
And all parties now feel ‘confident’ of extending the winger’s contract for another four or five years.
Gnabry claim addressed over Chelsea, Arsenal
Chelsea reportedly approached Bayern to register their interest in Gnabry. Reports consequently emerged that the former Arsenal man was unwilling to cross that particular London divide.
However, Kicker claims such reports are untrue. But while Gnabry is not completely against moving to Chelsea, he currently sees no reason to leave Bayern and wants to stay.
In fact, the report adds that Gnabry can even see himself finishing his career at Bayern as it stands.
For now, though, the winger – who turned 27 on Thursday – is only focused on signing the biggest contract of his career.
Liverpool also had links with Gnabry in recent weeks amid doubt over Mohamed Salah’s future. But with the Egyptian extending his Anfield terms until 2025, a move there looks to be off the cards.
And with Chelsea signing Sterling, it is Man Utd who look like they could most do with an attacking signing like Gnabry.
They are currently after Ajax’s Brazilian star Antony but his current price tag of €80million (£68million) is proving prohibitive.
Bayern man can flourish with new deal
Gnabry has had to go the long way round to prove himself at a top European club.
He faced rejection at Arsenal and then had to make his name with a move to Werder Bremen in Germany.
However, now that he has reached a career peak, he had to think very carefully about his next contract decision.
And given Bayern are almost guaranteed Bundesliga title and Champions League chasers every year, he sees no reason to leave.
Should the new deal go through, the winger can go into his prime focused on his football – not his future.
