Chelsea outcast still harbours hope of returning ‘through front door’ in 2023

Tammy Abraham still has designs on returning to Chelsea “through the front door” after he was sold to Roma last summer, claims a report.

The former Bristol City man was somewhat bundled out of Stamford Bridge in August after the Blues landed Romelu Lukaku. Abraham joined up with Jose Mourinho in the Italian capital after Roma paid £34m for his services.

Chelsea immediately made sure there was a buyback clause in the deal. That can be exercised by the Blues at £68m from 2023.

Mourinho has been a good influence on the striker’s career. And 17 goals in 30 appearances to date, as well as four assists, has been a good return.

Asked about the advice he received from Mourinho, Abraham said: “Just be a monster really!

“I think one of the things he said was I was too much of a nice player and that you have to show that aggressiveness as you’re getting older as a striker.”

And it appears that Abraham, 24, still harbours hope of a return to Stamford Bridge.

Corriere dello Sport, via Sport Witness, have reflected on the England man’s time in Italy.

Abraham ‘worth more than €40m plus bonuses Roma spent’

They claim that, after six months, the striker “is worth more than €40m plus bonuses spent by Roma in the summer”.

They also suggest that the buyback clause, which at the time looked on the high side “doesn’t seem disproportionate”.

And for Abraham that would be good news because he “would like to go home one day through the front door to conquer the showroom of his Premier League”.

A sale in 2023 does not seem out of question for the Serie A side, who would have had the forward for at least 18 month. Roma are confident of securing “robust compensation” for the No 9, who was loaned out three times by Chelsea.

Whether or not Thomas Tuchel would fancy a return for Abraham is anyone’s guess. But the arrival of Lukaku has turned sour somewhat after a promising start. And a 20-goal haul in Serie A this season will surely have the Blues coaching thinking.
