‘London boy’ Tammy Abraham enjoys transfer talk and opens door on Chelsea return

Roma striker Tammy Abraham says he enjoys being linked with other clubs and has opened the door on a return to the Premier League to “make noise there”.

The former Chelsea star left Stamford Bridge last summer after the arrival of Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian’s return to the Bridge meant Abraham’s game time would be severely impacted. So the 24-year-old took a leap of faith and signed for Roma. He penned a five-year deal for a £34m fee and has been a huge success for Jose Mourinho.

He has netted 15 times in 30 Serie A games, and added three assists to see his value soar. And the ‘London boy’ has set his sights on a return to the Premier League.

Chelsea are understood to have included a £67m buy-back clause when selling the England international. However, that clause only becomes active next summer and effectively gives Chelsea first refusal on Abraham.

Abraham told talkSPORT: “For me I’ve always been a player growing up, watching the Premier League and watching football.

“When I heard about different teams and certain players I always thought: ‘Wow I want that to be me one day.’

“I’m sitting in bed one day on Instagram and see that Tammy’s been linked with so and so and as a player it makes you feel good.

“As a player it makes you feel like you’re doing something right. For me it’s a nice feeling to be linked. To see your name all over the newspapers etc.

“But for me it’s just doing my business here. Focusing on what I am doing here so I can keep getting linked with all the clubs.”

Abraham’s form has seen “many clubs” ask about the former Aston Villa man. And the Corriere dello Sport explains that Manchester United are “ready to launch a large investment to bring him back to the Premier League immediately”.

But the feeling is that Abraham fancies a return to west London with some unfinished business at Chelsea.

“It’s all over the place at the moment. Who knows what the future holds,” he said when asked about Chelsea.

“Of course I grew up in England. And I’m a London boy so maybe one day I will be back in the Premier League to make noise there.

“But, for me right now, it’s about focusing in Rome. It’s about focusing on doing the best I can. And hopefully I can win these guys a trophy, which they haven’t won in many years.”

Abraham reveals Mourinho influence

Abraham, who has revealed that England boss Gareth Southgate has been in touch with him, revealed that playing for Mourinho was a big draw for him.

“It [Mourinho] was a factor involved, yes,” added the striker.

“As a young English lad I wanted to stay in England. Rome came along and Atalanta and many different teams around the world. I was telling myself I wanted to stay in the Premier League and that I had something to prove.

“But my dad, parents and agent sat me down and said ‘you scored goals at Chelsea, Swansea and Bristol City, go and test the waters. Go and experience life abroad.’ When they were speaking it kind of dawned on me that not many players can say they’ve gone out in Italy, to Serie A and a team like Rome.

“I never back down from a challenge so when this challenge came along I thought as I’m still young this is the best time for me to go and do it.”
