Majority Chelsea owner Todd Boehly doesn’t have faith in two Chelsea players and wants to land an Everton star to replace them, according to a report.
Chelsea have had a turbulent start to the campaign. Thomas Tuchel was sacked as manager in early September, partly down to poor results but also as a result of him failing to get on with the new board of directors.
Chelsea brought in Graham Potter from Brighton as Tuchel’s replacement. The Englishman is tasked with making Chelsea Premier League title challengers again, while he must also future-proof the squad as part of a long-term project.
The Blues have been inconsistent since Potter’s arrival. They have done well in the Champions League, winning their last four matches to top Group E.
Chelsea also pulled off three consecutive league wins against Crystal Palace, Wolves and Aston Villa between October 1 and October 16.
But since then, Chelsea have failed to win in five league outings. And to make matters worse for Potter, they lost all of their last three Prem games before the World Cup break.
One problem for the west London outfit is that they are conceding too many goals. For example, Brighton scored four past them on October 29 to make it a miserable return to the south coast for Potter.
Chelsea have Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga as goalkeepers in their squad. When both are fully fit, it seems the manager prefers to use Arrizabalaga as he is better with his feet.
Boehly wants goalkeeper replacement
But according to The Sun, neither shot-stopper has done enough to ‘convince’ Boehly that he is the right man for the job. As such, Chelsea chiefs are working hard in the background to capture a new keeper for Potter.
They would ideally like to bring in Robert Sanchez from Brighton. After all, Potter knows the Spaniard well from his time managing the Seagulls.
However, Brighton are known to charge top dollar when selling their best players. Just look at the expensive deals for Marc Cucurella and Ben White. Due to this, Chelsea are eyeing up alternative signings who shouldn’t cost as much.
And The Sun claim they have landed on Everton star Jordan Pickford. The 28-year-old is part of Frank Lampard’s English core of players at Everton, which also involves Conor Coady, James Tarkowski, Anthony Gordon and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Pickford is apparently firmly on Chelsea’s radar, and they are drawing up plans to make a move for him in 2023.
Chelsea to keep an eye on Jordan Pickford this winter
In the mean time, Chelsea will monitor Pickford’s performances at the World Cup. He is likely to be Gareth Southgate’s first-choice keeper for the tournament in Qatar.
Chelsea will see if the former Sunderland man has the mentality to cope with the pressure on the world’s biggest stage. He should manage this, given the fact he helped England to reach the Euros final last year.
The report notes that Pickford is happy at Everton. And contract talks with the Merseyside outfit are going well, too.
But Chelsea’s huge finances mean they could offer Pickford more money than Everton. Plus, they can offer him Champions League football. These two factors may result in the keeper attempting to push through a switch to Stamford Bridge.
Pickford would be a good signing for Chelsea. He shouldn’t cost as much as Sanchez, while he also boasts more experience at a higher level.
However, some Chelsea fans may question whether Pickford is actually an upgrade on Arrizabalaga and Mendy. After all, the Everton man has been known to make mistakes in big games before.
