Chelsea transfer news: Multiple sources indicate interest in thrilling Lewandowski transfer raid

Robert Lewandowski may become a striker target for Chelsea in the summer even though his preference is to join Barcelona, various reports are indicating.

Chelsea will once again be looking for a centre-forward in the summer if a takeover by Todd Boehly goes through in time for them to make transfers. Their last couple of purchases for the position have not paid off.

For example, Timo Werner has lacked luck and form since his 2020 move from RB Leipzig. Then, 2021 arrival Romelu Lukaku has not justified his club-record price tag.

Either could move on this summer if Chelsea get their way. After all, Thomas Tuchel has often preferred to deploy Kai Havertz up front from his current options.

But a natural number nine will be on Chelsea’s wish-list as long as they can make signings and sales in the summer. In that regard, they are now being linked with one of the best around: Lewandowski.

Various sources, including The Guardian and Goal, are carrying reports about Chelsea looking into Lewandowski.

The Poland international is about to enter the final year of his contract with Bayern Munich. He is ready for a fresh challenge as he targets the Ballon d’Or.

Many have regarded Lewandowski as the best player in the world for the past couple of seasons. However, France Football’s prize was not awarded in 2020 and went to Lionel Messi in 2021.

Lewandowski, who won FIFA’s equivalent award in each of those years, is now eyeing the acknowledgement before his career reaches its twilight.

At the age of 33, many players of his bracket would be slowing down. However, Lewandowski is seemingly getting stronger; he has scored 50 goals in all competitions this season, from 46 appearances.

In fact, he has surpassed the 40-goal barrier in each of the past seven seasons for Bayern. Those are the kind of numbers that Chelsea would benefit greatly from, compared to what Lukaku or Werner have given this season.

Chelsea battle Barcelona for Lewandowski

Indeed, one European football expert recently suggested signing Lewandowski would be the ingredient Chelsea need to close the gap with Manchester City and Liverpool.

It appears, indirectly, they have heeded that advice. According to The Guardian, Tuchel is a major admirer of Lewandowski and Chelsea could consequently make a move.

Goal back that idea up, although both sources confess a deal would have its difficulties.

First, Lewandowski would prefer to move to La Liga over the Premier League. Specifically, Barcelona is his ideal destination. In fact, some believe he already has an agreement with them.

But financial questions linger at Camp Nou. Therefore, it is not a given that they would be able to acquire him. Nor are Real Madrid interested; it means Lewandowski may have to consider the Premier League instead.

He has had his reservations about moving to England, but could consider it now.

Chelsea could be the ones to test Bayern’s resolve, despite the Bundesliga champions’ desire to keep him for the last year of his contract.

But there are factors that could work against the Blues anyway. As The Guardian remind, Chelsea will need to allocate more funds to their defence as Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and potentially Cesar Azpilicueta leave.

And Goal reinforce the idea that Chelsea would struggle to sign Lewandowski without selling Lukaku first. It remains unlikely they will be able to recoup the fee they spent last summer.

No better striker for Chelsea to find

However, the fact there is an interest there should come as little surprise, given Chelsea’s previous links with Lewandowski and existing need for a striker.

It may only be a short-term solution, but the first thing people see with Lewandowski is not his age. It is his fearsome goal record.

Chelsea need a guarantee up front. Although he has no Premier League experience, Lewandowski would likely provide it.

Therefore, they will be waiting with anticipation to see if there is any chance of them beating Barcelona to one of the signings of the summer.
