Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly is reportedly attempting to swap Ruben Loftus-Cheek for a Serie A midfield star often regarded as one of the top performers in Italy.
The Blues are gearing up for what will likely be a heavy period of spending in January. Recently-appointed manager Graham Potter is now two months into the job and getting to learn what his newly-acquired squad now needs. Indeed, after a bright start to his reign, the heat has been turned up after four defeats in five games.
However, despite claims that the job is too big for Potter and that he could be sacked, Boehly remains very much behind the manager. As such, the two men are using the break in the Premier League season to finalise their plans for the January window.
Taling stock of his squad and it does not take a genius to realise that Chelsea are a little light in the attacking department. As such, we revealed on Tuesday that Chelsea already have one deal in the bag with a second, club-record deal, potentially set to follow.
In additon, Chelsea also have a few issues to solve in midfield. The Blues are, as things stand, on course to lose both N’Golo Kante and Jorginho on free transfers next summer.
The two players have been cast-iron regulars at Stamford Bridge and the departure of either will leave major holes. As such, the exit of both at the same time will leave Boehly with a significant chasm to fill.
However, reports in Italy suggest plans are being drawn up in that eventuality with eyes firmly set on a talented Lazio star.
Chelsea keen on Sergej Milinkovic-Savic
Indeed, according to Calciomercato, the Blues are exploring a deal to sign Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
The 27-year-old Serbian is regarded as one of Serie A’s top midfielders after a superb spell in Rome. Now in his eighth season with Lazio, Milinkovic-Savic has made 314 appearances for the Biancocelesti, scoring 63 times.
Indeed, his form has regularly seen him touted as a target for Manchester United.
And they were reportedly back on his trail this summer, amid claims Lazio were considering his sale for £75m. The links even drew a response from the player, who finally gave his verdict on those long-standing rumours.
Over the summer, both Arsenal and Tottenham were also linked with moves.
However, it seems Chelsea are engineering themselves right to the front of the Milinkovic-Savic queue.
The Serbian’s deal is about to enter its final 18 months and Calciomercato claims the Blues are sniffing an opportunity.
And rather than signing the player in a straight cash deal, they plan to offer Loftus-Cheek in a swap.
The 10-times capped England man has been featuring regularly this season, but also falls out of contract in 2024.
As such, the article suggests the swap deal could prove the perfect outcome for all parties. Indeed, Potter appears yet to be convinced the 26-year-old is worthy of a long-term role in his side.
A move to Lazio would see Loftus-Cheek reunite with Maurizio Sarri. The former Chelsea coach is now in charge at the Stadio Olimpico, having succeeded Simone Inzaghi in 2021.
