Chelsea ready to raise Wesley Fofana offer to record territory, but Leicester gap still looms

Chelsea are getting ready to make a new offer to Leicester City for Wesley Fofana, according to reports, after the gap between their valuations was revealed.

After bringing in Kalidou Koulibaly, Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucurella and a few promising talents, Chelsea have turned to Fofana as their next target. Along with the more experienced Koulibaly, he would help replenish the ranks at centre-back.

However, Fofana is proving to be an expensive target. Leicester have been tough sellers in recent years and are demanding a record sum for a defender if they are to give Fofana up.

They already set the record themselves when offloading Harry Maguire to Manchester United in 2019 for £80million. Hence, they are seeking a price higher than that for Chelsea target Fofana.

According to Football London, Leicester would only be interested in a fee above the £80million they took for Maguire. An offer in the region of £85million would prompt “serious talks”.

The Foxes are not in a position to explore potential part-exchange deals, despite Chelsea drafting up some plans of that style.

Yet they have conceded they will lose Fofana at some point. There is supposedly an arrangement for him to leave if “reasonable offers” come in for him in 2023.

But Chelsea want him now, not next year. Therefore, Football London claim they are getting ready to raise a new offer.

With Fofana potentially pushing for a move, Chelsea are growing in confidence they may be able to get him before the September 1 deadline. Their next bid might not meet the £85million threshold, but they will make a world-record offer and still feel they have a chance.

Elsewhere, the Independent have revealed Chelsea are currently just £10million short of the asking price for Fofana. Their indication is that he could be gettable for £80million after all.

At that price, he would be Chelsea’s second most expensive signing of all time, after Romelu Lukaku last year. Should their pursuit be successful, the Blues will be hoping the defender is more successful than the striker was.

Step up possible for Wesley Fofana

He certainly has the attributes, as well as time being on his side. Chelsea have required a new defender in addition to Koulibaly this summer, so Fofana fits the bill.

The only concern, given the price involved, would be his physical state. He missed much of last season after a serious injury, so it is taking time to get back to his previous levels.

But still only 21 years old, Fofana has many years of technical growth ahead of him. He is already coming from a strong starting point.

Chelsea would be hoping he would be a worthwhile investment if he does arrive at Stamford Bridge.
