Chelsea transfer news: Fresh Fofana subplot sees Leicester line up raid for Callum Hudson-Odoi

Callum Hudson-Odoi representing Chelsea

Callum Hudson-Odoi has been named as someone who could move in the opposite direction amid Chelsea’s pursuit of Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana.

Chelsea are working on a transfer for Fofana as they aim to bring in another centre-back. They have already added Kalidou Koulibaly to their squad this summer, but need one more after losing Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

Fofana will not come cheap for Chelsea, however, Reports earlier on Thursday suggested he could cost a world-record fee for a defender.

It has been a case of going back to the drawing board for Chelsea, then. They have already been considering the use of one of their own players as a makeweight to help make the deal more reasonable.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been the main candidate to leave Chelsea for Leicester within the deal. But now, it has emerged that the Blues have another player of interest to the Foxes.

As reported by CBS Sports‘ Ben Jacobs, Leicester are admirers of Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The Chelsea academy product has attracted interest from elsewhere for some time. Earlier in his career, there were rumours of a big-money move to Bayern Munich.

Hudson-Odoi’s productivity has dropped off somewhat over the past couple of years. Therefore, the calibre of club he is now being linked with seems to have decreased.

Winger wanted by Leicester

There were recently suggestions of interest from Newcastle United. Now, Leicester have joined the hunting pack.

Both are prestigious clubs in their own ways, who will be hoping to finish in the top half of the Premier League. It is fair to say they would be a step down from Chelsea (or Bayern) though.

At the age of 21, Hudson-Odoi can still have a bright future ahead of him. He will want to be playing regularly, though, and may have a better chance of that at another club, like Leicester or Newcastle.

If Leicester are to take him, Jacobs notes that the negotiations would likely be separate to those for Fofana. In his case, the Foxes would only take into consideration a big, straight-cash offer.

Hence, Chelsea may still have that dilemma over meeting the centre-back’s price tag.

Leicester could be good stage for Callum Hudson-Odoi

But Hudson-Odoi’s suggested switch in the other direction may be beneficial on his own individual level.

Leicester are yet to make a signing this summer. Finding new talent to bring into their squad would be helpful if they can.

Hudson-Odoi is the kind of young talent who would bring excitement to the King Power Stadium. A manager like Brendan Rodgers should be able to get the best out of him.

And if Leicester lose the in-demand James Maddison, for example, they would have a need for further attacking creativity from areas other than the centre-forward position.

Hudson-Odoi could provide that, although Leicester merely have an interest for now. It will be interesting to see if they follow up on it with any kind of enquiry or offer.
