Third rejected bid breaks Chelsea will, as Tuchel abandons big-money coup and alternative search begins

Wesley Fofana, Leicester City, August 2022

Chelsea have reportedly pulled out of a potential transfer for Wesley Fofana, after they had third bid rejected for the Leicester City man.

Chelsea have been linked with a number of big transfers of late. It seems they are still keen on improving their squad, despite having made six additions this summer.

Indeed, they have spent a fair amount of money so far, and see no problem in splashing more cash.

The Blues have a number of transfers in the works, including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Anthony Gordon.

However, it seems one signing they were keen on will now not be happening. The Sun reports that Chelsea have pulled out of the pursuit for Leicester defender Fofana.

The centre-back had been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge for some time. Chelsea had bid a couple of times, and had them both rejected.

A third bid has now been rejected – as per the report – which was seemingly the last straw, as the Blues have now walked away.

The club reportedly feel that Leicester have priced the star out of his ‘dream move’.

The report claims that Thomas Tuchel’s side do still want to pursue a centre-back. However, they will now turn their attention to other players.

It is not clear who they will pursue now, but they will have to get a move on, given the transfer window closes in just a few days.

Rodgers confirms rejected transfer offer

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers confirmed that the club had rejected a bid for Fofana, following their Carabao Cup game against Stockport County.

“We’ve received one fresh bid for Fofana and it has been turned down,” he said.

It also seems that the defender may have been attempting to force a move this week.

“[He is] training with the U23s after failing to turn up to a training session last week”, Rodgers added.

Fofana not a massive loss for Chelsea

Losing out of Fofana is not too big of a problem for Chelsea. Of course, they were very keen on taking him on board, but there are other defenders who are also well suited.

Indeed, Fofana has played just 37 games in the Premier League, after missing a big chunk of last season through injury. As such, he is not all too experienced, despite his quality.

While it is not clear who Chelsea might go for instead, the Daily Mail recently reported that the Blues are keen on Brighton’s Adam Webster.

The 27-year-old has performed consistently in the Premier League throughout the past three seasons. He has previously been tipped for a place in the England squad, though he is yet to make his debut.

Chelsea would not have to pay nearly as much for the centre-back as they would have for Fofana. As such, Webster could be a good alternative to shore up the defence and add to the depth.

There have also been links to Harry Maguire. The defender was absent from Manchester United’s starting lineup on Monday, amid reports of a potential move.

However, the Englishman would likely cost a fair sum, which the Blues will likely not be too keen on.
