Wesley Fofana: Chelsea transfer ‘close’ as Blues put up massive record-breaking bid for Leicester man

Leicester centre-back Wesley Fofana

Wesley Fofana is reportedly ‘close’ to joining Chelsea after the Blues sent Leicester a third, improved offer for the defender.

Fofana has become one of Chelsea’s top targets this summer following Jules Kounde’s transfer to Barcelona. Chelsea were hoping to land the player from Sevilla, only for Barca to beat them to his services.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are still in desperate need of one, if not two centre-backs. As such, they are willing to spend big on Fofana.

Chelsea’s first bid for the 21-year-old came in at £62million. But Leicester held firm and pushed this back as it did not meet their asking price.

The offer forced Brendan Rodgers to publicly state that Fofana, along with James Maddison, will not be going anywhere.

“These players are not for sale,” he said. “We need to move players out but it’s not getting rid of everyone and certainly not our best assets.

“It’s something the club are very strong on. James and Wesley are training very well and working hard for our game on Sunday.”

However, his comments did not put Chelsea off and they soon came back with a better offer worth around £70m.

This was more in line with Leicester’s valuation and some were expecting the Foxes to accept.

However, they did no such thing and once again told Chelsea to come back with improved terms or walk away from negotiations.

Chelsea come back with new offer for Wesley Fofana

Chelsea are intent on signing Fofana though and French outlet Media Foot claim they have put forward a third bid.

It has the potential to be worth an astonishing £84.5m thanks to add-ons. This would make Fofana, a former Saint-Etienne player, the most expensive defender ever.

Currently, the record is held by Manchester United and England star Harry Maguire. He cost the Red Devils £80m when joining from Leicester in August 2019.

It appears Chelsea’s latest offer for Fofana has done the trick. That’s because Media Foot state the player’s move to west London is ‘close’ to reaching completion.

Transfer down to the final stages

The vast majority of the work on the deal has apparently been done, with just the final details remaining.

Following an agreement between the two Premier League sides, Chelsea just need to sort out personal terms with Fofana.

This should not pose an issue as the France U21 international likes the idea of taking the next step in his career with Chelsea. Plus, the Blues can offer him a significant pay rise.

This is certainly a promising update for Chelsea. It just needs to be ratified by other big sources, such as Fabrizio Romano or David Ornstein, before Chelsea fans can get well and truly excited.

Fofana would be an excellent capture for the Blues to complete. He is still young but has the potential to become a top defender in the Prem.

£84.5m is clearly a lot of money to spend on someone who is yet to win a trophy or play more than two full seasons in England.

However, Wesley Fofana is someone who has the tenacity and drive to ensure his Chelsea stay will be a success, should the move go through.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich reportedly made an enquiry about a Chelsea star earlier this summer.
