Wesley Fofana: Chelsea submit third offer for Leicester star, with Brendan Rodgers facing big decision
Chelsea have reportedly sent Leicester City a third bid for French defender Wesley Fofana and have found out whether it will be enough to land him.
Fofana is Chelsea’s top target as they look to improve their centre-back options following the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen. The Blues have already managed to sign Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli, though they lost out on Jules Kounde to Barcelona.
Chelsea began the bidding for Fofana at £62million. But Leicester soon told them he was not for sale and that a transfer would only be agreed for a huge price.
Chelsea then put forward a new proposal, which came in at just under £70m. Once again though, the Foxes pushed it back.
Reports then suggested Thomas Tuchel’s side could make Fofana the most expensive defender in history by paying £84.5m (€100m) for him. This would eclipse the £80m Manchester United paid Leicester for England international Harry Maguire three years ago.
As per the Daily Mail, Chelsea are also considering a move for Brighton’s Adam Webster if the Fofana pursuit fails.
John Percy of The Telegraph provides a big update on Fofana’s prospective move to Stamford Bridge. He states the Blues have put a third bid worth £70m, including add-ons, to Leicester. Like the previous two offers, this was rejected.
Fabrizio Romano adds a little bit of information. He claims Chelsea will push again to sign the 21-year-old. They are confident of agreeing a deal as Fofana wants the move.
Wesley Fofana talks give Rodgers selection problem
And previous reports state personal terms have already been sorted out between Fofana and Chelsea.
Brendan Rodgers is now facing a big selection headache. Leicester come up against Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday, following their EFL Cup clash against Stockport tonight (Tuesday).
Fofana was kept out of the squad for the 2-1 defeat to Southampton at the weekend amid the transfer talks. And Rodgers must now decide whether the centre-half will feature against Chelsea.
He is clearly worsening his team by leaving the France U21 international out. But Fofana could end up making a mistake in the game as his head is elsewhere.
Fofana to Chelsea is certainly one to keep an eye on in the final week of the transfer window. Leicester have regularly shown they are no pushovers when it comes to players leaving the King Power.
As such, Chelsea know it will take an astronomical bid to land Fofana. And this could see Todd Boehly sanction a huge bid near the September 1 deadline.
Fofana could probably do with another season at Leicester to hone his skills before leaving for a bigger team. Having said that, he has shown he is able to shine in the Prem during his time with the Foxes. Due to this, he will be confident about doing well at Chelsea, should the transfer go through.
Meanwhile, West Ham are on the verge of announcing the signing of a £15m player from Chelsea.
