No Leeds move yet as Diame is one of 11 freed to leave Newcastle

Reported suitors Leeds are yet to make an approach for Mohamed Diame after the powerful midfielder was confirmed as one of 11 players to be shown the door at Newcastle.

The Senegal midfielder joined the Magpies from Hull City in summer 2016 and has proved a key figure under Rafa Benitez, having made 103 appearances during his three years at St James’ Park.

With his three-year deal coming to an end, Newcastle did retain an option to extend the former West Ham man’s stay by a further year. However, Newcastle have told Diame his contract won’t be extended, meaning the 31-year-old French-born star can leave as a free agent this summer.

Diame has been mentioned as a target for Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa as he seeks reinforcements at Elland Road ahead of another push for promotion and news of their interest was inadvertently leaked by Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler during a match last season.

Although Leeds are aware of the midfielder’s situation, the Yorkshire side are yet to make their move for the midfielder, though that’s not to say an approach won’t be forthcoming in the days and weeks ahead.

Magpies boss Benitez, meanwhile, has paid tribute to Diame for his contribution to the cause, saying: “Mo has been a great servant to Newcastle United in his three years here. He has given us a lot on and off the pitch and we wish him well for the future.”

Cal Roberts, Josef Yarney, Tyrique Bartlett, Juanito, Otto Huuhtanen and Stefan O’Connor, as well as scholars Max Allen, Thomas Cole, Sam Joyce and Deece Kasinga Madia, are the other players leaving St James’ Park this summer, the club has confirmed.
