Albert Sambi Lokonga has become Crystal Palace’s second deadline day signing, putting pen to paper to a loan move from Arsenal.

It’s not been the most exciting transfer window for Palace, but they’ve come good when it mattered. Indeed, both of their signings in the January window came on deadline day.

What’s more, both will offer a welcome boost to the midfield ranks.

First, Naouirou Ahamada joined from Stuttgart for what was reported to be in the region of £10.5million. The deal for Lokonga was in the works while that was ongoing.

Not long after the Ahamada deal was confirmed, news came through that Lokonga would also be heading through the door at Selhurst Park.

The Belgian has played a good amount of first-team football since he joined Arsenal ahead of last season. Indeed, he made 19 Premier League appearances in his maiden season at the club.

In the current campaign, he has found himself on the pitch less, with Martin Odegaard and Thomas Partey performing to a very hight standard.

In the league, Lokonga has played just six times, with only two of those coming from the start.

Lokonga joins until end of the season

As such, an opportunity to get some much needed minutes was a welcome one. It’s ideal for the midfielder that that opportunity has come in the Premier League, and for a club who are in a good position – currently 12th.

It seems the club were aware of the options presented to him, and they’re happy he picked Selhurst Park for the rest of the season.

“I would like to welcome Sambi to south London, and am pleased he has chosen to join Patrick’s squad for the rest of the season, after making an impressive start to life in English football,” chairman Steve Parish said on the Crystal Palace website.

“He has been on our radar for several years since his emergence at Anderlecht, and we very much look forward to his contribution as we push to climb the table.”

Lokonga also revealed his happiness at plying his trade at Palace for the remainder of the campaign, as well as his goals for the period.

“I’m really excited – I can’t wait to get started. I’m really happy to join Crystal Palace. I want to go as far as possible with the team. I will try to push for me and the team to do the maximum to reach the top,” he said.

The Belgium international has signed on loan for the season and will be keen to prove a point. He has found chances hard to come by this season and will want to show Mikel Arteta what he is missing. The transfer does not contain an option for the Eagles to make the move permanent. As such, Lokonga will return to Arsenal at the end of the season.
