Crystal Palace could see Conor Gallagher return to the club on loan from Chelsea, as the Blues may not be able to aid his World Cup dreams.
Gallagher was one of the most impressive young players in the Premier League last season. Indeed, the 22-year-old had a great start to the campaign, scoring two goals on the second appearance of his loan at Palace.
His good form continued throughout the season. The midfielder ended the campaign with eight goals and five assists in all competitions.
Gallagher’s impressive performances in a Palace shirt afforded him a place in the England side. He is yet to score in his four appearances, but contributed an assist in a game against Switzerland, in which he was named man of the match.
Continuing to perform at club level should help his case for a spot in the Three Lions’ World Cup squad. Indeed, talkSPORT reports that Gallagher wants to put himself in contention for a place in the squad.
That report states that the midfielder wants assurances from Thomas Tuchel that he will get enough minutes at Chelsea for that to happen.
As yet this season, Gallagher has made one start, in the Blues’ 3-0 loss to Leeds United. Other than that, he has gotten onto the pitch for just six minutes.
As such, Chelsea may not be able to offer him the required minutes to make sure he is on the plane to the World Cup. That could play into Palace’s hands.
They have shown that they are keen on taking Gallagher back to Selhurst Park for another loan spell.
The talkSPORT report states Palace believe the 22-year-old would favour a return to the club, if he is allowed to leave. There has also been interest in him from West Ham and Newcastle United.
Gallagher, Palace return ideal for all parties
Gallagher returning to Palace would be an ideal situation for all involved. At present, it does not look like he will be given the minutes he desires, having only started the Leeds game thanks to an injury to N’Golo Kante.
As such, a return to Palace would surely allow him to play consistently, as he did last season.
Given he performed for the Eagles then, he should be able to do the same again, and continue being selected for England. Therefore, all parties would be happy.
What’s more, he would continue to develop, before returning to Chelsea next season, ready to fight for a spot in the side, after potentially having experienced World Cup football.
