Both parties keen to make Crystal Palace ace’s move a reality, manager confirms

Jean-Philippe Mateta, Odsonne Edouard, Crystal Palace, December 2021.

A transfer away from Crystal Palace for Jean-Philippe Mateta is edging closer after Saint-Etienne’s manager confirmed the side are in contact with the striker.

Mateta’s reported move to Saint-Etienne has been stop-start to this point. The French side’s interest was reported weeks ago, but seemingly they could not afford Mateta’s wages.

However, a recent report claimed that the Ligue 1 club are in fact able to pay his salary.

Palace appear as if they will allow Mateta to cut his loan from Mainz short. Indeed, he has played just six times for the Eagles this season.

What’s more, they would have to pay Mainz £13.4million should Mateta start 15 Premier League games.

Given those factors, it seems they would have no problem with Saint-Etienne taking the Frenchman off their hands.

Furthermore, Saint-Etienne seem very eager to make that move a reality. Greens boss Pascal Dupraz told France Bleu of their intentions, quoted by Sport Witness.

“But what I can tell you. It’s that we have him on the phone regularly. There are rules to be observed, and it is still inappropriate to say that he will join us, but there is a will, and it is unanimous,” he said.

Indeed, the French club are keen on landing the striker, given they sit rock bottom of Ligue 1. What’s more, Mateta was prolific in his last spell in France, when he scored twice in the Ligue 1 playoffs in 2017/18, after scoring 17 goals in Ligue 2 that season.

With neither Crystal Palace or Mainz seeming to object at present, Mateta could become a Saint-Etienne player very soon.

Mateta out, but Nketiah advised to avoid Palace

Eddie Nketiah Arsenal

In other news, Eddie Nketiah is a target for multiple Premier League sides in the January window.

Palace and Brighton seem the most likely suitors for the young forward. However, Darren Bent has advised Nketiah that Brighton may be more suited to him than Palace.

“The Palace one surprises me when they have [Christian] Benteke and Odsonne Edouard,” he said.

“Nketiah, for me, is a natural goalscorer, who will pick up them positions. Out of those two clubs, he suits Brighton.”

Despite the comments, expect Palace to continue to pursue Nketiah in January.
