Crystal Palace are set to battle Italian outfit Fiorentina for the signing of a 17-goal striker, according to one journalist.
The Eagles bolstered their attacking options this summer with the capture of Odsonne Edouard from Celtic. The Frenchman, once a target for Arsenal, was brought in for £14million.
He has got off to a decent start in south London, notching three goals in eight Premier League matches.
Edouard is beginning to form an effective strike partnership with Christian Benteke and Wilfried Zaha. They caused Wolves all sorts of problems in the recent 2-0 victory at Selhurst Park.
Edouard’s arrival saw fellow striker Jean-Philippe Mateta fall down the pecking order. The 24-year-old is partly through an 18-month loan from Bundesliga side Mainz. However, he could be sent back to Germany as Patrick Vieira continues to use alternative options in attack.
It now seems Palace will attempt to improve their centre-forward options further with the signing of Real Madrid’s Borja Mayoral.
He is a former Spain U21 international who bagged 17 goals while on loan at Roma last term. The player is still there but has seen his game time vastly reduced under new manager Jose Mourinho.
Southampton need to target a winger
The Saints should look to invest in a winger in January.
Spanish journalist Rocio Rodriguez now provides an update on Mayoral, as per Sport Witness. He claims Fiorentina are leading the transfer race as things stand.
Mayoral is open to joining Vincenzo Italiano’s side, where he could become Dusan Vlahovic’s replacement. But Palace are very much alive in the pursuit and want to bring him to England.
Vieira’s men ‘cannot be ruled out’ as they look to bolster their squad in January. Mayoral’s parent club, Real, are willing to cut his loan with Roma short. That would allow them to sell sooner rather than later.
They would prefer a deal be struck in the winter window, rather than next summer.
Telling update on Palace’s Anguissa pursuit
Meanwhile, Palace look set to lose out on Fulham and Cameroon star Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa.
The defensive midfielder is currently plying his trade with Napoli in the Italian top flight. They have the option to make his loan move permanent next year.
And Italian journalist Valter De Maggio reckons they will do just that. He said recently: “In the last few hours, I have received a draft about an operation the club will close only in June.
“You know what operation I am referring to, the masterpiece from the Napoli director this year. And he bears a name and is called Anguissa. He was taken by Napoli for a loan of only €400k from Fulham.”
