Crystal Palace latest: Jack Butland future in doubt as Sam Johnstone contract offer revealed

Premier League Football, Aston Villa versus Crystal Palace; Jack Butland of Crystal Palace makes an acrobatic save

Jack Butland’s future at Crystal Palace is reportedly in doubt as England ‘keeper Sam Johnstone looks set for a move to Selhurst Park.

Despite featuring for Palace at the end of the season, Butland was second-choice for much of the 2021/22 campaign. He made just nine league appearances with Vicente Guaita starting ahead of him. Now, Butland looks set to leave or risk falling further down the pecking order, with Johnstone’s announcement expected soon.

According to The Sun, promoted AFC Bournemouth and Scottish giants Rangers have both shortlisted Butland for this summer.

Rangers are keen on landing a replacement for their current shot-stopper Allan McGregor. He is approaching the end of his contract, and at 40-years-old his future is uncertain.

The Cherries currently have Mark Travers between the sticks. Travers missed just one league game throughout the season as Bournemouth conceded the least amount of goals in the division.

Despite failing to make much of an impression in  the league, Butland did have a strong FA Cup campaign.

The 29-year-old helped Palace reach the semi-final stage, where they were beaten 2-0 by Chelsea.

Johnstone looks set to take Butland’s spot as he approaches the end of his West Brom deal.

According to The Daily Mail, Johnstone has been offered a five-year contract at Palace, with discussions in the advanced stages.

The 29-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from West Brom for some time now.

Baggies boss Steve Bruce stopped playing Johnstone at the end of the season. He admitted that the England ‘keeper would be leaving his club, therefore felt it was right that they began playing without him.

Before that, Johnstone looked poised for a move to Spurs. Now, it seems he is destined for a diferent London club, with Patrick Vieira including him in their plans.

The former Man Utd ‘keeper will compete with Guaita to be No.1 throughout next season. However, Johnstone is hoping that with a string of good perfomances, he can replace the Spaniard as first-choice.

Guaita is also 35-years-old now, and has been rumoured to be looking for a move back to Spain.

However, whether Palace would be willing to let Butland and Guaita leave remains to be seen.
