Wilfried Zaha swap deal in the works as Roma plan to offer striker in exchange for Palace star

Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha

Roma have been tipped to offer a teenage striker to Crystal Palace as part of a player-plus-cash deal for Wilfried Zaha.

The former Manchester United player was in great form at Selhurst Park last season, registering 15 goals and two assists in all competitions. He thrived as Patrick Vieira brought new energy into the club, as well as some exciting attacking players.

Stars such as Ebere Eze and Michael Olise, as well as loanee Conor Gallagher, helped to take some of the pressure off Zaha. Crystal Palace were no longer as reliant on his creativity – helping the 29-year-old to flourish in front of goal.

Zaha’s contract with the south London club expires next year. Many expect him to extend his terms there and eventually retire as a club legend.

But recent reports have put Zaha in line for a summer move away from the Premier League entirely. According to Sky Sport Italia and Tuttomercatoweb, he is a target for Jose Mourinho at Roma.

The manager wants to sign another attacker to play alongside Tammy Abraham. And Zaha is deemed a great fit.

The Daily Mail provide an update on the rumours, while citing journalist Gianluca Di Marzio. They claim Roma have taken their interest a step further and are now planning a player-plus-cash offer.

The Italian side are willing to send 19-year-old striker Felix Afena-Gyan, as well as a decent amount of money, to Palace in exchange for Zaha.

Afena-Gyan to be used as makeweight in Wilfried Zaha offer

However, the report doesn’t reveal exactly how much money will be included in the package.

Afena-Gyan joined Roma in January 2021 and has gone on to appear 22 times in their first team, scoring twice.

The youngster has been in better form for Roma’s youth and second teams, finding the net 15 times in 27 outings. This suggests he isn’t quite ready for senior football just yet.

Afena-Gyan is a full Ghana international, which is a plus. And Roma believe they can secure Zaha’s signature by offering him as a replacement.

But Palace are extremely unlikely to accept this proposal, unless a lot of money is sent their way too.

Zaha is very important to the way the Eagles play and is a proven source of goals. Afena-Gyan, in contrast, is yet to develop into a top-flight-level forward.

Perhaps this is Roma’s way of getting the discussions up and running, by starting with a fairly cheeky proposal. They will soon find out that they need to put a big cash offer on the table to even get Palace’s attention.

Meanwhile, Palace have completed the signing of Malian midfielder Cheick Doucoure from Ligue 1 side Lens.
