Anthony Gordon transfer latest: Everton come to firm decision as Tottenham hopes suffer downturn
Tottenham have reportedly cooled their interest in signing Anthony Gordon following talks over his potential signing from Everton.
The Toffees are looking to generate some much-needed income this summer as they battle to stay within FFP limits. And having suffered a brush with relegation last season, Frank Lampard faces a tough task in ensuring a better campaign this time around.
However, he will have to do so without talismanic Brazilian forward Richarlison. The 25-year-old is on the brink of a switch to Tottenham, with the deal netting Everton as much as £60m.
That cash injection will come as a welcome bonus for the Toffees. And Lampard will hope to use a portion of those funds to help with his summer transfer plans.
Indeed, Everton were seemingly fully prepared to cash in on Richarlison. He will, though, be a miss with the player coming to the fore when Everton needed him the most last season. Indeed, during that crucial relegation run-in, Richarlison scored six goals in their last nine games.
However, once he made it clear he wanted to depart, Everton were not going to stand in his way.
As such, negotiations taking him to Tottenham have proved relatively simple to conclude.
Everton stance made clear
During those talks, Tottenham reportedly also asked Everton about a deal for Gordon too. The 21-year-old enjoyed an excellent 2021/22 season on a personal level, making himself one of the first names on the Toffees’ teamsheet.
He scored four times in 35 Premier League appearances and also weighed in with two assists.
But that form has alerted Spurs and, amid Everton’s financial issues, he was reportedly the subject of a double bid.
Fears that Gordon too could depart for Tottenham enhanced on Tuesday evening amid a claim that he wished to make the move.
However, Sky Sports claim Everton have informed Tottenham that Gordon is not for sale at any price. As such, Tottenham are cooling their interest in the 21-year-old winger, who now looks likely to stay at Goodison.
Anthony Gordon sale would have been hard to stomach for Everton
The fact Gordon is staying will come as a welcome relief for Everton fans and Lampard. He is a great young talent and clearly benefited from Lampard’s faith in him. And he promises to get even better and add more goals to his game in the 2022/23 season.
Selling Richarlison is one thing, though if Everton can reinvest some of that money, their supporters will probably understand. Indeed, talk is growing that they could move now for Steven Bergwijn. His place at Tottenham looks in some doubt as a direct result of the Richarlison signing.
Indeed, had Gordon been sold there would have been uproar at Goodison Park.
That’s a view shared by Bleacher Report journalist Dean Jones.
Tottenham's triple transfer raid on Everton
Antonio Conte is reportedly planning a triple raid on Everton, for Richarlison, Ben Godfrey and Anthony Gordon.
Speaking to GiveMeSport, he said: “Everton have had so many problems over the last couple of seasons, especially with the relationship between the club and the fanbase.
“So, if they were to get rid of Anthony Gordon there would be uproar, so I don’t believe they will sell Anthony Gordon unless they get absolutely ridiculous money for him.”
Meanwhile, Andros Townsend has told Richarlison why a move to Spurs is not the step he believes.
