Anthony Gordon breaks silence on ‘absolutely crazy’ Chelsea bids; gives thoughts on Everton future

Everton winger Anthony Gordon

Anthony Gordon has spoken about his transfer saga for the first time, after Chelsea tried to sign him from Everton in the summer.

Chelsea were hoping to land Gordon to bolster their attacking ranks. They came forward with a £40million bid for him in mid-August.

However, this was pushed back by Everton. The Toffees were eager to keep Gordon at Goodison Park and set their asking price at £50m.

Chelsea soon found out about this price tag but rather than matching it, came back with a £45m offer. Once again, Everton rejected it.

There were rumours of a potential player-plus-cash deal for the Englishman, which could have involved striker Armando Broja.

However, a third proposal never came about and Gordon ended up staying on Merseyside past the September 1 deadline.

He remains an important player for Frank Lampard, having played in all seven of Everton’s Premier League games so far this season. Gordon has already got on the scoresheet in consecutive matches against Brentford and Leeds United.

The 21-year-old has picked up more international experience during the recent break, too. He featured in the England U21 matches against Italy and Germany.

Anthony Gordon reacts to Chelsea interest

Gordon has now spoken about the Chelsea transfer bids for the first time, during an interview with the Evening Standard.

He admits the money being talked about for him was ‘absolutely crazy’, though it shows just what the game is like at the moment.

“That’s football nowadays – it’s absolutely crazy,” he said. “Personally, I don’t think any player is worth that amount of money but I’m also not going to talk myself down.

“The money in football, that’s just how it is nowadays. You’re also paying for potential all the time these days. That’s just how football goes.

“I wasn’t too focused on that because I can only control what I can control.

“I think the minute you do that (thinking he is a £60million player), there’s only one way you’re going to go.

“You need to stay humble. You need to focus on today and tomorrow and don’t look too far into the future.

“That’s part and parcel of football. When you’re doing well, there’s always going to be that speculation.”

The star then tackled his Everton future. He suggested he could remain with the Toffees for the foreseeable as he is happy there.

“Because the place (Everton) is so good, it’s not a place where I’m devastated because I have to stay,” Gordon added. “That’s never been the case. I was never desperate to leave Everton. It was definitely not the case.”

Gordon is right about the figures being ‘absolutely crazy’. He has only played a few seasons at senior level but it already valued at £50m by Everton.

As he mentions, a large part of this is down to his potential. Big clubs such as Chelsea are looking for players who can make a difference now but also have bright futures.

Gordon fits right into this bracket, which is why the west London side were willing to pay £45m for him. Ultimately, however, they fell short of Everton’s demands.

Meanwhile, a pundit surprisingly thinks one Everton outcast still has a future at the club under Lampard.
