Everton in contact for impressive loan capture of Brazilian once linked with Arsenal, while risking failure in another pursuit

Everton are in contact about the possible signing of former Arsenal target Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus, according to reports in Italy.

Arthur was linked with a Premier League transfer back in January, when he was wanted by Arsenal. Ultimately, the move never materialised and he saw out the season with Juventus. As the transfer deadline for this summer approaches, though, the idea of a transfer to England is back on.

There was renewed talk of interest from Arsenal earlier in the summer. However, if he is to move to the Premier League, it could be via a different route.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Everton have made contact about the chance to sign Arthur. They would be looking at a loan deal for the midfielder.

Arthur is surplus to requirements for Juventus, who want to offload him so they can sign Leandro Paredes from Paris Saint-Germain. Hence, the Brazil international is a gettable target for the Toffees.

They are rivalling Lisbon-based outfit Sporting CP for his signature on loan. Both suitors seem to be at the same stage of their interest.

As the report from Tuttomercatoweb acknowledges, Everton would like to sign one more midfielder if they can before the transfer window closes, despite already bringing in Amadou Onana earlier in the summer. If they can fend off Sporting, Arthur could be their man.

At the age of 26, it could be another fresh start for Arthur. He has only spent two seasons with Juventus after leaving Barcelona in 2020. For the Serie A side, he has only scored once and provided one assist from 63 appearances in all competitions.

Formula for Arthur Melo could work in Everton’s favour

Although still under contract in Turin until 2025, Juventus prefer other options. With that in mind, they are willing to let him go. And at this stage of the transfer window, that may have to be on loan.

It could suit Everton as a less risky approach, depending on how much of his wages they would have to cover. But it could be one they could benefit from if Arthur can rediscover the potential he was showing in his earlier career.

Alas, he hasn’t lasted particularly long at either Barcelona or Juventus. But a move to Everton could give him a new challenge – outside European football, but in the Premier League.

That said, Sporting can offer him a continuation of his involvement in the Champions League. Therefore, they could be an appealing destination too.

The coming hours are expected to be decisive in determining where Arthur will be playing his football for the rest of the season.

Everton risk missing out on another midfielder

Everton’s interest in Arthur may have come as a result of their pursuit of Idrissa Gana Gueye being on the verge of collapse.

Gueye has been linked with a return to Everton in recent weeks after being put up for sale by Paris Saint-Germain.

However, the method by which the transfer has been most likely to happen is for Gueye to cancel his contract one year ahead of schedule and move on a free. For that to happen, though, PSG need to agree a pay-off.

And according to Football Insider, they are struggling to agree the terms of such an arrangement.

With that in mind, despite an agreement with Everton, Gueye could miss out on his return to Goodison Park. In turn, they could look more closely at Arthur Melo instead, perhaps.
