Everton are rivalling two major European clubs for the signing of a France international, according to reports.
The Toffees bolstered their attack in the summer with a number of shrewd arrivals. Andros Townsend joined on a free transfer from Crystal Palace following the expiry of his contract.
Demarai Gray, formerly of Leicester City, was brought in for just £1.6m. Rafa Benitez favourite Salomon Rondon was then signed from Chinese outfit Dalian Professional for free.
Townsend and Gray have both got off to a brilliant start. They were on the scoresheet during the 3-1 victory over Burnley in September.
The pair also played a big part in Everton’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford. Gray started a counter-attack with a blistering run down the left wing.
He then played in Abdoulaye Doucoure, who in turn gave the ball to Townsend inside the box. The Englishman beat David De Gea with a composed finished as Benitez’s side picked up a hard-earned point.
Everton officials want to improve their forward line further. That’s the view of Italian outlet Calciomercato (via Sport Witness), who claim that the Toffees are interested in Marcus Thuram.
The left winger has represented France on four occasions so far in his career. He bagged eight league goals for Gladbach last season as they finished eighth in the Bundesliga.
Thuram also got on the scoresheet twice in the Champions League. He registered a brace against Real Madrid in the group stage. Gladbach reached the round of 16 before being knocked out by Manchester City.
Calciomercato write that Everton are ‘thinking of’ Thuram ahead of next summer. However, they are not alone in admiring his talent.
Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund are also casting glances in his direction. Inter made an official approach to sign him this year but failed to get a deal over the line.
Revealing the pursuit, Gladbach director Max Eberl said: “It’s true that Inter showed great interest and that there was a very specific offer. But first of all, Marcus didn’t want to leave. Second, we looked at the offer, but actually didn’t want to let him go.”
It looks like either Everton, Inter or Dortmund will have to come up with an enticing offer to prize Thuram away from Gladbach.
He has made 81 appearances for the German side in all competitions, scoring 25 goals.
Pundit reacts to Everton signings
Pundit Alan Hutton believes Benitez will attempt to find some more hidden gems in January.
The Spaniard was integral to the signings of Townsend and Gray. Their success has helped to fight off some of the stigma regarding his appointment.
When asked if Benitez could repeat his transfer masterclass this winter, Hutton said: “He’s not done too bad so far [after] his first transfer window.
“The boys he’s brought in have been absolutely superb. Everton, over the past could of seasons, have spent a lot of money. A lot of them haven’t quite worked out.
“It’ll be a case of see what you can get. If you can bolster the squad with somebody relatively cheaper then no problem.
“They’re going well at the moment. The signings are doing really well, they’ve hit the ground running and I’m sure the fans and Benitez will be really happy so far.”
