TEAMtalk can reveal that Everton winger Anthony Gordon has submitted a transfer request, as he looks to secure a move away from the club this winter.
Newcastle and Chelsea have both registered an interest in signing the 21-year-old, with the Magpies reportedly launching an initial bid for him in the last few days.
Indeed, it’s now looking increasingly likely that Gordon will be departing his boyhood club and heading to Tyneside as we enter the final week of the transfer window.
TEAMtalk reported on Tuesday that Newcastle had launched an initial bid for the Englishman, which is believed to be in the region of £35m, with £15m in potential add-ons.
Everton turned down similar bids for Gordon last summer, but it seems Newcastle have a real chance of getting their man now that he has expressed his desire to leave.
Gordon has also failed to turn up for Everton’s last two training sessions following the sacking of Frank Lampard on Monday, which has only added to the speculation.
Last season, Gordon was a key player as the Toffees narrowly avoided relegation. However, like many Everton players, he has struggled for form this season and the club now find themselves joint-bottom of the Premier League table.
On his day, the youngster is effective and direct, with the pace to cause any defender problems.
This season, Gordon has featured 18 times for the Toffees, scoring three goals. However, his form has been intermittent and he was left out of the starting XI for Lampard’s final game in charge against West Ham.
Newcastle the big favourites to land a deal for Gordon
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is allegedly very keen on signing Gordon this winter, as he looks to bolster his team’s attack as they look to push for a top-four spot.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Magpies are increasingly confident they can get a deal over the line, despite interest from Chelsea.
They recently allowed centre-forward Chris Wood to join Nottingham Forest on loan until the end of the season, which has left an attacking void in the squad.
Newcastle are also considering selling Allan Saint-Maximin this winter amid growing interest from AC Milan. The Frenchman has been a key player for the Tynesiders since joining in 2019 but has featured infrequently this season.
With that in mind, Gordon could be an ideal fit and provide competition for the likes of Miguel Almiron and Joelinton for the rest of the campaign.
The only question that remains is if Everton will grant Gordon’s wish and allow Gordon to leave, which is difficult to answer given that they still haven’t appointed a new manager.
However, the fact that the Blues are being increasingly linked with a move for Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech, as well as Rennes winger Kamaldeen Sulemana, suggests that they are prepared for it.
