Frank Lampard ‘pushing hard’ for priority Everton signing amid Ajax and Championship rumours

Frank Lampard on the Everton touchline

Everton boss Frank Lampard is ‘pushing hard’ to get a new striker in at the club this winter, according to a journalist.

Everton’s attacking problems extend into last season. They only managed to score 43 times in 38 Premier League games, which is one of the reasons they were down the bottom.

Richarlison was in decent form for the Toffees, notching 10 goals in 30 Prem outings. But Dominic Calvert-Lewin spent much of the season out with a toe injury, limiting him to just 17 league appearances.

Salomon Rondon was also in the Everton squad last term. However, he has never been known for his goalscoring exploits and did little to help Everton in the final third.

There have been some big attacking changes at Everton, with Richarlison leaving for Tottenham in a £60million deal during the summer. Everton spent £15m of that on Brighton’s Neal Maupay, while Rondon terminated his Toffees contract earlier this month.

Unfortunately for Lampard, Everton’s problems with scoring persist. Calvert-Lewin is still battling injury and Maupay hasn’t found the net since September 18 in the league.

Following Everton’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves on Boxing Day, they sit in 17th place, just one point above the drop zone. And only two teams – Wolves and Nottingham Forest – have scored less goals than them this campaign.

Lampard clearly needs a new striker adding to his squad in January. According to journalist Simon Phillips, that type of signing is his priority for the upcoming transfer window.

Frank Lampard gunning for Everton striker signing

The former England midfielder is ‘pushing hard’ to bring in a new goalscorer.

“Lampard still wants to boost the midfield and he also wants a striker in January,” Phillips told GiveMeSport. “Those are the two priorities. But the striker was still a priority in the summer even though they still had Rondon then.

“They didn’t have enough trust in him and Lampard didn’t really back him, so Lampard has been asking for a new striker since the summer.

“Calvert-Lewin, obviously [he’s] struggling with a lot of injuries lately. So that’s another reason why Lampard is pushing hard now to bring a new striker in in January.”

It is no surprise Lampard wants Everton officials to sign a new striker given how blunt they have been in attack during his tenure. Everton fans will be looking forward to seeing which player their club can bring in.

An exciting arrival on Merseyside would be Mohammed Kudus. The Ajax forward has notched 10 club goals this campaign, while he also scored twice representing Ghana at the World Cup.

Everton have previously made an approach to Ajax to sign Kudus. They could reignite their interest in him during January, although interest also comes from Liverpool and Tottenham.

An alternative to the Eredivisie star is Blackburn Rovers’ Ben Brereton Diaz. He is proving to be a real handful in the second tier, having scored 31 goals over the last two seasons.

Like Kudus, there have been regular rumours involving Everton and Brereton Diaz. It is now up to Lampard and Everton to make another move for Brereton Diaz, or pursue someone new.

Meanwhile, Tuesday’s Transfer Gossip claims Everton hope to sign a winger from Manchester United.
