Everton have held talks with Tottenham over a move for unwanted midfielder Harry Winks, claim reports.
Winks was reported to be a target for Frank Lampard over the weekend, with Football Insider reporting contact had been made.
Now the Liverpool Echo and Sky Sports News say discussions are ongoing between the clubs as Lampard aims to bolster his midfield. The former Chelsea boss has earmarked a ball-playing midfielder to help his side maintain possession.
“To improve, in a lot of ways. We want to play, the way we’ve played in the last month was fantastic but it’s been a certain type of football. We’ve played a lot of big teams who have had more possession.
“We want to look at how we can be a little bit better in possession. Some of that will be the squad and recruitment, others will be how we work in pre-season,” said Lampard recently.
Talks are said to be “at an early stage” but the transfer could well suit all parties.
Winks has been told to find a new club and has no future under Antonio Conte, according to Sky. And after just nine Premier League starts last term the former England man will be eager to kickstart his career.
“Listen, I love Tottenham, I’ve always made that clear, but I want to play football. And I want to play regular football,” Winks said in October.
Winks wants regular games
“The only way to play your best football, get momentum is when you’re playing regularly. Listen, I’m giving my all for the club, of course I am. They stuck by me, I stuck by them – and I want to play for Tottenham.
“But it is difficult when you get matches here and there, confidence is low and you don’t get that run of games. It is difficult,” Winks added.
He was used sporadically from the bench in the last three months of the campaign. And the Liverpool Echo claim “Winks would favour a move to Goodison Park”.
Winks does have two years to run on his current deal and “at least three other top-flight clubs” are interested.
Everton though are understood to be at the head of the queue for the player, who has been capped 10 times by England.
They are understood to have tried to sign the player in January alongside Dele Alli.
