Everton back in the mix for PSG player as journalist predicts new round of transfer talks
A journalist has tipped Everton to go back in for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Idrissa Gueye, despite having already signed Amadou Onana this summer.
The Toffees spent £34million to bring Onana to the Premier League from French side Lille, according to the Daily Mail. And the Belgian had an eventful debut, to say the least.
He came off the bench with 10 minutes left in the 2-1 loss to Aston Villa. At that point, Everton were 1-0 down and looking for an equaliser.
But Onana lost the ball in the centre of the pitch and this allowed Villa to capitalise and double their lead through Emi Buendia.
Onana didn’t let his head go down though and bullied his way into the opposition box soon after the resultant kick off. He put a dangerous ball across goal which was bundled in by Lucas Digne for an own goal.
Everton didn’t manage to get a second at Villa Park, though Onana certainly won some admirers. Former player Noel Whelan told Frank Lampard to consider starting the new signing ahead of either Abdoulaye Doucoure or Alex Iwobi in Everton’s next match.
Ultimately, this didn’t happen. But Onana did come off the bench in the 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Onana looks set for a bright future with Everton. However, they could yet land another central midfielder prior to the end of the summer transfer window.
Idrissa Gueye may end up back at Everton
The Toffees have been linked with a move for former player Gueye. He spent three years at Goodison Park before leaving for PSG in summer 2019.
Gueye is low in the PSG pecking order due to the arrival of new boss Christophe Galtier. Due to this, the reigning Ligue 1 champions are happy to let him go back to Merseyside, but only if the right deal is struck.
The two teams were originally in discussions over a loan move. They took a turn on August 1, as Everton began to wonder if a permanent transfer could be agreed.
Recently, French newspaper L’Equipe reported that talks between Everton and PSG had stopped. This put Gueye’s transfer in serious doubt.
According to reporter Abdellah Boulma (via Sport Witness) though, Everton are planning to restart dialogue with PSG. They hope to find a solution to the transfer impasse.
Gueye is apparently keen to go back to Everton as he will pick up more game time there than in the French capital. After all, PSG have just brought in two top midfielders in Vitinha and Renato Sanches.
Gueye is now 32 so needs to prioritise playing regularly if he is to remain at a high level for another three or four years. But clearly his move back to the Prem relies on PSG agreeing to the new set of talks.
Meanwhile, Everton are reportedly plotting an audacious swoop to land a top Manchester United transfer target.
