Everton are among the clubs interested in signing Seny Dieng from Queens Park Rangers in the January transfer window, according to reports.
The report, via Football Insider, has claimed that the Toffees are planning a bid for Dieng, but Frank Lampard’s side are not the only club who are keen on signing Dieng. Indeed, Dieng is regarded as one of the best stoppers outside the Premier League.
In fact, he’s been described as “an outstanding goalkeeper” by former QPR manager Mark Warburton when discussing the star to WestLondonSport in February 2021.
Everton’s Premier League club Bournemouth have strong interest in Dieng, while Ligue 1 outfits AS Monaco and Lille are also planning offers for him in the January transfer window.
Bournemouth, Everton, Monaco and Lille have also extensively scouted Dieng, who won the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal.
This is not the first time that Dieng has been linked with clubs in the English top flight.
In January 2021, Arsenal, Leeds United and Crystal Palace were reported to be looking at potentially signing Dieng.
West Ham United were claimed to be lining up a bid for the Senegal international goalkeeper in the summer of 2021.
Dieng has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship and has been playing well for QPR this season.
Seny Dieng progressing well at QPR
The 27-year-old has been on the books of Rangers since 2016 and has had loan spells at Dundee and Doncaster Rovers among other clubs over the years.
It was only in September 2020 that the Senegal international goalkeeper was able to make his league debut for QPR.
Dieng is now one of the first names on Michael Beale’s teamsheet now.
The goalkeeper has made 20 appearances in the Championship for the London club.
The QPR No 1 has actually even scored.
During the 2021/22 campaign, the former Grasshoppers goalkeeper played 28 times in the Championship, while in 2020/21, he made as many as 42 appearances in the Championship for the Rs.
Everton considering Jordan Pickford successors
Jordan Pickford is the undisputed No 1 goalkeeper at Everton at the moment, and in an ideal world that will long continue at Goodison.
However, the England keeper’s contract is due to expire in summer 2024, and he is yet to sign an extension. As such, Pickford has been strongly linked with moves elsewhere, with TEAMtalk revealing that Tottenham are among those keen.
As a result, the Toffees are exploring both potential successors and would-be back-ups.
Pickford’s current deputy is Asmir Begovic, who is 35 years of age. Dieng is much younger and still has room to grow and progress.
QPR are in the running for the Championship play-offs this season, and while they will certainly not want to lose their first-choice goalkeeper in the middle of the campaign, if Everton made a big offer in January, then it would be hard for Rangers to turn it down.
Moreover, the Senegalese goalkeeper himself could be keen on a move to a big and established club such as Everton. However, the Merseyside club need to be wary of competition they are facing from Bournemouth, Monaco and Lille for Dieng.
